Pfc. Paul C. Halderman

 

 

RECEIVES HUSBAND’S MEDAL

Posthumous award of the bronze star medal won by Pfc. Paul C. Halderman on Okinawa last April was made to his widow, Mrs. Ellen Halderman, at the home of his mother, Mrs. William Lester, 609 Water street, by Maj. Arthur Ireland, in charge of the R. O. T. C. program at the University of South Dakota.

Pfc. Halderman, who was in the 381st infantry regiment, 96th division, was cited for heroic achievement from April 10 to April 14, 1945, when he fought off Japanese counterattacks with rifle and grenades and kept the machineguns of his section supplied with ammunition.

He was fatally wounded by shrapnel April 14. Halderman was the son of Mrs. Lester and Clifford Halderman, 800 River drive. He entered the army in October, 1943, and served in the South Pacific a year before his death.

His widow and their daughter, Penny, 2, live at 314 W. 26th street, with Mrs. Halderman’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar G. Henry.

Paul Clifford Halderman was born Aug. 21, 1925 to Clifford and Gertrude Gray Halderman. He died Apr. 14, 1945 and is buried in Logan Park Cemetery, Sioux City, IA.

Pvt. Halderman served in World War II with the U.S. Army 381st Infantry.
