Lt. (j.g.) and Mrs. William Frederick Garner arrived Thursday morning as a surprise for a brief visit in Council Bluffs with Lt. Garner’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy J. Garner and daughter Joan. Lt. Garner has been stationed at the naval air facility at Ayer, Mass. The couple will leave Friday noon for Kansas City, Mo. Mrs. Garner expects to return to this city for a more extended visit after spending some time with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy V. Flesh, at Webster Groves, Mo.

MISSING
Lt. (jg.) William F. Garner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy F. Garner, 524 Oakland avenue, has been reported missing in action in the Pacific theater of war, according to word received here. A graduate of Thomas Jefferson high school, he attended the University of Iowa prior to joining the service.

William Fredrick Garner was born Aug. 23, 1920 to Roy John and Minnie Irene Kinsel Garner. He died Mar. 19, 1945 and is memorialized at the Tablets of the Missing at Honolulu Memorial, Honolulu, Hawaii and has a cenotaph at Hazel Dell Cemetery, Council Bluffs, IA.
Lt. Garner served in World War II with the U.S. Navy Bomber Fighter Squadron Eighty-Three, flying from the USS Essex (CV-9). He was in a group of 13 fighter planes whose mission was a strike against targets on Kyushu, Japan. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
