Tech Sgt. Tony Flores is somewhere in the European theater of operations, according to a letter received by his brother, Jess Flores, 1616 Madison N. W. Before entering the service, Sgt. Flores was employed at Decker’s. His brother, Pvt. Salude Flores, is in the Pacific and took part in the recent operations on Guam.

Requiem High Mass Held
for Pfc. Salude Flores
“World Needs to Join as Unit
in Asking for Effective Peace,” Derga
Solemn requiem high mass was conducted at the Holy Family Catholic church Tuesday morning for Pfc. Salude F. Flores, killed in combat in Italy (sic) on Jan. 27. Father R. P. Murphy, pastor of the church, was celebrant with Father Lee Derga of Manly as deacon and Father Alvan Heuring of St. Joseph’s, Mason City, as sub-deacon. The sermon was preached by Father Derga.
“The holy sacrifice of the mass is offered for one who has sacrificed everything he had for his country,” said Father Derga. “That his sacrifice shall not have been in vain depends upon whether we, as a nation, draw nearer to God and thus bring about a just and lasting peace.
“This war is not a result of one man or another . . . It has been coming on for years because people are forgetting and ignoring God. . . . When we fail to observe the laws of God, He in His great love of us permits tribulation, even wars, all in merciful effort to make man think of Him again. What the world needs is to join as a big strong unit in asking God for the things it really needs to bring about peace. Only then can we become effective for a lasting peace,” concluded Father Derga.
Pfc. Salude Flores was born in Mexico and came to Mason City with his parents in 1920. He attended the McKinley school here and was employed at Decker’s at the time of enlisting the service here in October, 1943. He went overseas last March, his first action being in the recapture of Guam.
Pfc. Flores is survived by his wife, Mrs. Esther Flores, 832 Carolina N. E., 4 sisters and3 brothers as follows: Mrs. Ralph Mayo, Mrs. Frances Herrera, Mrs. John Infante, and Shirley Flores, all of Mason City. One brother is in the service, T/Sgt. Tony Flores, now in Iran; a brother, Joe, living in Mexico, and the other brother, Joe (sic, should be Jesse), lives in Mason City. He was preceded in death by his parents, who had returned to Mexico.

Pfc. Salude Flores Was Killed
in Action on Leyte, Jan. 27
Pfc. Salude Flores, for whom memorial services were held at the Holy Family Catholic church Tuesday, was killed in combat on Leyte, not in Italy as erroneously stated in Tuesday’s account of the services.
Pfc. Flores is survived here by his wife, Mrs. Esther Flores, 832 Carolina N. E., and their 2-year-old son, Jerry, also a brother, Jesse and 4 sisters in Mason City, Mrs. Ralph Mayo, Mrs. Frances Herrera, Mrs. John Infante and Miss Shirley Flores. His brother, T/Sgt. Tony Flores, is now in Iran and his 3rd brother, Joe, lives in Mexico. He was preceded in death by his parents.

MEMORIAL FOR SERVICE MEN SUNDAY
Five members of the armed forces who have given their lives in combat will be honored at the 8th joint public memorial service to be held at Music hall Sunday afternoon at 3:45, with the Rev. Russell Pope, pastor of the Church of the Open Bible, giving the eulogy.
Burial flags given by the United States government will be presented to the next of kin of these 5 servicemen to be thus honored; Salude F. Flores, killed in Leyte; Michael Chimbidis, killed in Luxembourg; Mitchell A. Harding, killed in Germany; Lloyd Phillip Allen, lost on U. S. S. Warrington; and Robert C. Jacobson, killed on Iwo Jima. The Gold Star citation scroll given by the national department of the American Legion will also be presented to those receiving the flags.
The program will open with a 5 minute prologue to be played by Mrs. Roy Servison. Mrs. Harold Wolfe will sing 2 selections with Mrs. Servison at the piano. Company E of the Iowa state guard will furnish the honor guard and firing squad for the day. John Reuber is bugler.
All veteran organizations and their auxiliaries and all other patriotic organizations will attend in a body with their colors. They are requested to be at Music hall at 3:45.
