Cpl. Corwin, Once of Dedham, Killed in France, July 12
Dedham (THNS) -- Mrs. Belle Wilson of Dedham has learned that her nephew, Cpl. William Duane Corwin, 20, of Sheffield, Ia., formerly of Dedham, was killed in action in France, July 12. Cpl. Corwin’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Corwin of Sheffield, were notified by the War Department, and they informed Mrs. Wilson. Mrs. Corwin is the former Naomi Aldrich of Dedham.
Cpl. Corwin was serving in a medical detachment in the infantry. He had written a letter to his mother July 11, the day before he was killed.
Besides his parents, he leaves a small brother, Louis.

Cpl. Duane Corwin, 21, Was in D-Day Invasion
Sheffield -- Cpl. Duanne Corwin was killed in action in Normandy July 12, according to word received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gordan Corwin at Sheffield Saturday. He was a medical technician. The last letter written by him July 11 was received by his parents July 23.
Duane was born April 2, 1923, at Dedham. He graduated from Belmond high school in 1940 and was employed at the Hub garage at Belmond when he entered the service Jan. 27, 1943
He went first to Camp Barkley, Tex., then to Granville, Mo., and Camp Kilmer, N.J. He was sent overseas and arrived in England June 3, 1943. He was with the American forces in the great invasion on D-Day.
His parents have lived in Sheffield about a year. He has a brother, Louis.

Corporal Send Home Nazi Banner Captured Week Before His Death
Sheffield -- Mr. and Mrs. Gordan Corwin received a nazi banner which was captured in battle by their son, Cpl. Duane Corwin, the first week of July.
Cpl. Corwin was killed in action in France, July 12. The banner was received by his parents a week after they were notified of his death.

William Duane Corwin was born Apr. 2, 1923 in Carroll Co. IA to Gordon Lewis and Margaret Naomi Aldrich Corwin. He died July 12, 1944 and is buried in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN. He was originally interred in the La Cambe-Isigny Cemetery in France and returned to the United States Feb. 2, 1948.
Sgt. Corwin was KIA July 12, 1944 near La Cambe, France while serving with the 175th Infantry, 29th Division, Medical Detachment. He enlisted from Wright Co. IA.
