ST. ANSGAR G.I. DIES IN ACTION
ST. ANSGAR -- The army casualty list Friday contained the name of Pvt. Dale E. Coonrod, son of Mrs. Bessie M. Coonrod, RFD 2, St. Ansgar, as killed in action in the Pacific regions.

MEMORIAL HELD FOR LEYTE HERO
Pvt. Dale Coonrod, 21, Gave Life for Country
St. Ansgar—Memorial services were held at the Methodist church Sunday for Pvt. Dale Coonrod who was reported killed in action on Leyte Nov. 10, 1944. He was serving as a military police when his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Coonrod, last heard from him. The Rev. Milton Nothdurft officiated.
Mr. and Mrs. Coonrod received word Monday that their son’s body has been permanently moved to a government military cemetery at Leyte where all U.S. soldiers killed in that area will be buried. They received a photograph of the large cemetery.
Dale was born east of Manly, Sept. 6, 1924. He attended the Rock Falls, Wheelerwood and Hanlontown public schools. After 2 years in high school, he began working on a farm and remained there until his induction into the Army, Oct. 3, 1943.
He took his basic training at Camp Fannin, Tex., and was then sent to Fort Ord, Cal., from where he left for overseas duty July 8, 1944. He first landed in New Guinea, then was sent to Leyte.

Dale Eugene Coonrod was born Sept. 6, 1924 to Carl and Bessie Cowell Coonrod. He died Nov. 10, 1944 and is memorialized at St. Ansgar Cemetery, Mitchell Co., IA.
Pvt. Coonrod served with the U.S. Army, Co. C, 62nd Armored Infantry, 14th Armored Division in World War II and was MIA/KIA at Leyte, Philippine Islands.
