Lyle Cooney, Radioman, third class, who has been located at Jacksonville, Florida, spent a week in the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry E. Cooney. He left last Friday for Seattle, Washington.

Of Manford L. Cooney
A letter from the War Department has been received by Mr. and Mrs. Harry Cooney, residing southeast of Brooks, brings a little more information about their son, ARM 1/c Manford Lyle Cooney, who was reported “missing at sea in the line of duty in the Pacific area.” The first information came about February 1 but did not give the date when Manford was missing.
The letter received last week states that Manford has been listed as missing since January 15, 1945. He was a radio operator on a plane operating from a carrier ship. The letter states that as his plane was catapulted from the carrier it crashed and burned. He had been in the Navy nearly three years and took part in many of the more important operations in the Pacific. He was home on furlough last August. A brother, Leonard Cooney, is with the American forces in Italy.

The neighborhood was greatly saddened by the report received by Harry Cooney family of Brooks, stating that their son, M. Lyle Cooney, ARM 3/c, formerly reported missing, had died in action. Lyle was a small boy when the family moved to our community where he grew to fine young manhood, dependable, respected and well loved. His military record was on par with his civilian life and sincerest sympathy is extended to his family by those who knew him so well, his neighbors.

Manford Lyle Cooney was born May 6, 1921 to Harry A. and Lulu Mabel McCoy Cooney. He died Jan. 15, 1945 and is memorialized at the Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines and in Villisca Cemetery, Villisca, IA.
Petty Officer Cooney served in World War II with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Enterprise (CV-6) and was MIA/KIA/FOD as the result of a plane crash while in the service of his country.
