Douglas Bruce Killed on Luzon
Cedar Falls – Word has been received here by Mr. and Mrs. Anders Iversen, 910 Clay street, that their foster son, Sgt. Douglas Bruce, 21, was killed in action June 13 on Luzon.
Sergeant Bruce was a radio man with a tank battalion. He entered service Mar. 17, 1943, and after training at Camp Polk, La., went overseas in May, 1944.
He was a graduate of Cedar Falls high school and a member f Bethlehem Lutheran church. He and two brothers, Pvt. Clair Bruce, Camp Fennin, Tex., and Marine Sgt. Elvin, returned Pacific veteran at Seattle, Waas., had made their home with the Iversens since their parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Bruce, died 13 years ago.
His foster brother, Second Lt. Guy W. Iversen, was declared dead in a letter received June 22. Lieutenant Iversen, an air force man, was in the Bataan death march and later lost when a Jap transport was sunk by a submarine on Oct. 23, 1944.
Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Lyle Cherry, 255 Cottage Grove avenue, Waterloo; Miss Frances Bruce, Chicago; and Second Lt. Gladys Bruce, army nurse at Percy Jones hospital, Battle creek, Mich.; a foster sister, Mrs. Merle Vetch, Burbank, Cal., and a foster brother, Pvt. Hubert W. Iversen, New Orleans, la.

Sgt. Douglas James Bruce is buried in Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
