Sioux City Aerial Navigator Is Air Force Veteran in Italy
Fifteeth A.A.F. In Italy—Special: First Lt. Mearle H. Bergeson, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mearle V. Bergeson, 3732 Sixth Avenue, Sioux City, recently tallied his 50th combat mission in Europe. He is a navigator on a 15th A.A.F. B-24 Liberator plane, based in Italy.
A graduate of east High School, Bergeson attended the University of South Dakota before joining the United States army air force in March 1943. He won his wings at San Marcos, Texas, May 20, 1944, and has been in Italy since last August. His decorations include the air medal with three bronze oak leaf clusters.
“I have never visited Berlin,” stated Bergeson, “but I have been to Vienna on numerous occasions and I can’t see how any target can be tougher than that one. The flak guns there are really terrific and we really sweated out our missions there.”

First Lt. Mearl H. Bergeson, son of Mr. and Mrs. M.V. Bergeson, 3732 Sixth Avenue, has completed his 50 missions and soon will return to the United States for a furlough and reassignment. He has been stationed in southern Italy as the navigator on a B-24.
