Whiting Soldier Killed in Africa
Mr. and Mrs. George Babb of Whiting, were informed by the War Department this week that their son, Corporal Samuel A. Babb, 23, was killed in action in the North Africa theatre of War on April 8.
Corporal Babb had been in the army two years, going first to Camp Clairborne, La., then to Texas and then to Camp Dix., New Jersey, before being sent to Ireland a year ago. He was with American troops landing in Africa last November. Earlier in the campaign Corporal Babb was wounded in action and was presented the purple heart at that time.
While in Ireland be became engaged to Miss Mary Ann Green. Details of how Corporal Babb met his death were not released.
Survivors besides his parents are two brothers, George at home and Private Robert Babb of Camp Hann, California, and four sisters, Anna at home, Mrs. Jessie Ray of Kansas City, and Miss Laura Babb and Mrs. Lillian Christy of Sioux City.
Mrs. Whiting Holmes, president of the American Legion Auxiliary, and several other members, called on Mr. and Mrs. George Babb on Monday to convey the sympathy of that organization and of the community. There is little anyone can do to lessen the sorrow felt by family and friends but we can express the understanding we have, and his death was not for his own family and their protection alone, but for all of us, and that our obligation to him and others who have met the same fate, will not be discharged unless we are doing all in our power to aid the effort in which he made the supreme sacrifice.

Samuel Asa Babb was born June 20, 1918 to George and Mae Rose Harding Babb. He died Apr. 8, 1943 and is buried in Oto Cemetery, Oto, IA.
Cpl. Babb served in World War II with the U.S. Army 133rd Infantry, 34th Division.
