Private First Class Elmer F. Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Anderson, of Akron, has been awarded the purple heart medal as the result of being wounded in battle. He is stationed somewhere in northwest Africa. He was inducted into the Army July 25, 1942, and was sent overseas in December.

WOUNDED A SECOND TIME
Pvt. Elmer Anderson, 26, of Akron, is recovering in an Army hospital in England from shell wounds in both feet. He has the Purple Heart with oakleaf cluster. The Akron soldier was in a foxhole in the Hurtgen forest when a mortar shell exploded in a tree overhead, fragments coming straight down and hitting his feet as he lay in the hole. His first wound was in Africa when a shell fragment pierced his hand. In civil life he is a farmer.

Elmer Ferdinand Anderson was born Sept. 12, 1918 to Ferdinand and Hannah Harkness Anderson. He died Jan. 11, 2005 and is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Akron, IA.
