Hudson Soldier Killed in Italy
PVT. THORWALD ANDERSEN ONCE WITH COMMANDOS
HUDSON, IA - Mr. and Mrs. Paul Andersen of Hudson received a telegram Friday afternoon from the war department that their son, Pvt. Thorwald Andersen, had been killed in action June 1 in Italy.
Private Andersen enlisted in the national guard in January, 1939, left for Camp Claiborne, LA in February, 1941, with Company D, and arrived overseas January 26, 1942, with the first contingent.
While overseas he joined the British commandos and took part in the African campaign in November, 1942.
He was transferred to a postal section and was sent to Italy in Sept, 1943. On March 16, 1944, he was transferred to an infantry company. He was part of a machine gun squadron at the time of his death.
The Andersens have another son, Ensign John Andersen, in the naval air corps somewhere in South America.
Private Andersen is the first casualty from the Hudson community.
Besides his parents and brother he leaves two sisters, Beth and Carma. He was a graduate of Hudson High School.

Thorwald Andersen Rites at Hudson
To Be Held On Sunday
Hudson, Ia. – Funeral services for Thorwald Andersen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Andersen, whose body has been brought back from Italy where he was killed during the war, will be Sunday.
Prayer service will be conducted at the residence at 2:15 and at the Community church at 2:30 with Rev. Clell Hickman, Reinbeck, officiating.
The American Legion and Anderson Amvets will be in charge of burial rites at the Hudson cemetery.
