Ackerson Loses Life at Iwo Jima

Marine Pfc. Delbert (Dub) Ackerson, 18, of Waterloo, was killed in action Feb. 22 on Iwo Jima according to a war department telegram received late Monday by his sister, Mrs. Russell Hane, 808 Randolph street, with whom he formerly made his home.

Private Ackerson left Waterloo for San Diego, Cal, to take his basic Training on Mar. 17, 1944 in 1944. In May he spent three days here and went to the Pacific in July. Iwo Jima was his first action against the enemy.

Born Feb. 8, 1927, in Waterloo, son of George and Anna Penning, Ackerson was adopted by his grandfather, Enno Penning, also of 808 Randolph, when his mother died in 1931. His grandfather died Sept. 12, 1944.

Surviving besides his sister are his father, living in Des Moines, and two brothers, Pvt. Henry, hospitalized at Springfield, Mo., receiving treatment for wounds suffered June 29 on Saipan, and Marine Sgt. Elmer, at Klamath Falls, Ore.

Delbert John Ackerson was born Feb. 8, 1927 to George E. and Anna Penning Ackerson. He died Feb. 22, 1945 and is buried in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery, Waterloo, IA.

Pvt. Ackerson served in World War II with the U.S. Marine Corps 21st Regiment, 3rd Division and was KIA on Iwo Jima.
