Francis Felix Arkfeld was born Aug. 30, 1922 to John Joseph and Mary Bridget Keane Arkfeld. He died June 7, 1944 and is memorialized at the Tablets of the Missing, Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-sur-Mer, France and has a cenotaph in Saint Marys Cemetery, Panama, IA.
Petty Officer Arkfeld served in World War II with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS LCT-486 and was MIA/FOD/KIA as the result of the Allied invasion and occupation of the beaches and coastal area of Normandy, France. His vessel struck a mine during the early assault and sank shortly thereafter.
