John William Haas AKA John William Hayward was born June 14, 1907 to Jay S. and Sarah Winifred Carney Hayward Haas. He was the stepson of Alfred Haas.He died June 4, 1942/FOD June 5, 1943 and is memorialized at the Courts of the Missing, Court 3, Honolulu Memorial, Honolulu, Hawaii.
Ens. Haas served in World War II with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Yorktown (CV-5) attached to Torpedo Squadron Three (VT-3) and became MIA during the Air Battle of Midway when the plane he was piloting was shot down. He was awarded the Navy Cross, Purple Heart, American Defense Service Medal with Fleet Clasp, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with one bronze battle star, and the World War II Victory Medal.
The USS Haas (DE-424) was named in his honor.
