Lt. Colonel Neel served with the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II.
His Obituary:
A friend brought us a clipping which provided news that one of Webster City’s most famous airmen of another era had passed away April 24 at Portland, Ore.
He was Glen Wilbur Neel, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel, who was on the first cross-country flight of a bombardment squadron.
Col. Neel, born in 1894 in Kansas, grew up in Webster City and was graduated from high school here. He won a commission as a second lieutenant at Barron Field, Texas and spent several years as a flight instructor and also as a “barnstormer” in the early days of aviation in Iowa.
After serving with the Veterans Administration, he joined the 1st Bombardment Group at Langley Field, Va., and flew with a squadron of Keystone bombers to March Field, Calif., on a flight that took five days. He later served as an Air Force officer during World War II and then retired, moving to Portland in 1947.
He was a governor of the Order of Quiet Birdmen, a national association of pilots from World War I days, and had earned a command pilot’s rating from the Air Force.
Surviving are his wife, Lenore, a former Webster City-an; two daughters; a son; eight grandchildren; two brothers, W. E. and K. F. Neel, both living in Iowa, and four sisters, Mrs. T. M. Gleason, Mrs. L. E. Fellows, Mrs. Kenneth Hill and Mrs. P. E. Nickerson, also all Iowa residents.
