William served in World War II with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Graffias (AF-29) in the South Pacific. He participated in the occupation of Japan when his ship entered Mutsu Bay in Northern Honshu. The Graffias was a unit of the N. Pacific Fleet that came from the Aleutian Islands to begin the occupation of Hokkaido and Northern Honshu, by taking over the Ominato Naval Base on Mutsu Bay, headquarters of the Japanese 5th Fleet.
