Merle Howard Shannon was born Jan. 25, 1917 to James Howard and Catherine Rebecca Bechler Shannon. He died Nov. 8, 2014 and is buried in Oakland Cemetery, Sac City, IA. Sgt. Shannon served in World War II with the U.S. Army in Ireland and England. He served 5 years as a field medic, participating in key battles including Omaha Beach and the Battle of the Bulge.
