Private Joe Goldstein, writes from “the Cherbourg peninsula,” where he landed “the memorable 6th of June” with infantry forces, that the three things uppermost in the minds of men at the front are prayer, a desire to get back home and resentment over strikes among war workers. Before entering the service Mr. Goldstein was proprietor of a clothes cleaning business here.

Ernest A. Kenny, Jr. aviation radioman second class, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Kenny, Sr., 3407 28th Street, has been spending a two- week leave with his family and parents. He now is en route to Jacksonville, Florida to assume his naval duties.

Private Alvin Thiele, after spending three days delay en route with his mother, has returned to Camp Marimar, San Diego, California where he will receive aviation training. Pvt. Thiele, son of Mrs. Amber Thiele, 316 W. Fifth Street, recently completed his boot training at San Diego.

Technician Fifth Grade Elmer E. Harbour has arrived in England, according to word received by his wife, Mrs. Louise Harbour, 2407 E. Third Street.

James V. Tritz, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.M. Tritz, 1906 Heights Avenue, recently was graduated from the naval air technical training center at Norman, Oklahoma. While at school he studied the aviation specialty field for which his recruit training attitudes tests showed he was best suited.

Second Lt. Billy S. Sparks, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Sparks, 3312 Jennings Street has been assigned to the weather section of the fighter pilot training station in Harding field, La. Lt. Sparks studied meteorology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and was stationed at Walnut Ridge, Ark., before going to Harding field.
Second Lt. Hugh R. Vickerstaff, 1504 Morningside Avenue, has been assigned to Camp Grant, Illinois.

Pvt. John H. Neely, Jr., son of Rev. and Mrs. John H. Neely, 419 ½ W. Third Street, has been transferred from England to somewhere in France. In Pvt. Neely’s latest letter to his parents, he told of receiving a wound in the hand.

Second Lt. Joseph J. R. Dufort of Los Angeles, California, whose wife,, Mrs. Josephine R. Dufort, lives in Sioux City at 2715 Dodge Avenue, copilot on a Flying Fortress, has been awarded the second oak leaf cluster to the air medal.

Pvt. First Class Elven L. Henshaw has returned to the Marine Corps base at Oceanside, California, after spending a 15-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. D. Henshaw, 4221 Tyler Street.

Technician Fifth Grade Richard A. Kurdle, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Kurdle, 723 W. Fourth Street, was graduated recently from the blacksmith and welders course, armored school, Fort Knox, Kentucky. He entered the army December 8, 1942 and since then has been with the 501st armored field artillery battalion. In May 1943 he was graduated from the auto mechanical course at Fort Knox and last October from the tank maintenance course. He has also attended the division lubrication school and the division internal combustion motors school.

Vernon L. Lundquist, aviation ordnance man third class, is spending an 18-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Lundquist, 1405 Omaha Street. He is being transferred from Banana River, Florida to Hutchinson, Kansas for further training.

Seaman Second Class Keith M. Abodeely, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Abodeely, 316 Isabella Street, has been transferred from Farragut, Idaho to Memphis, Tennessee where he is attending radio school.

Herbert W. Ford, U.S.N., son of Mr. And Mrs. M. J. Ford, 2132 Heights Avenue, has been promoted to yeoman second class. He has been serving in the south Pacific for the last 18 months.

Pvt. Clifford R. Clark, army air corps, is spending a 15-day furlough with his wife and children, 116 Cook Street and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Clark, 2301 Logan extension. He is on his way from Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio to Augusta, Georgia.
Floyd J. Hogan has been promoted to sergeant at a station somewhere in England, he has informed his wife, who resides at 710 W. Fourth Street. He is a son of Mrs. Will Lowe of Wayne, Nebraska.

S. Sgt. Harold N. Fisher, aerial photographer and gunner on a B-17 somewhere in England, has been awarded the air medal for meritorious achievement while participating in bombing attacks on industries in Germany and on enemy coastal defenses and supply lines in support of the allied invasion of France. Sgt Fisher’s wife resides at 2825 Sunset Circle. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Abraham Fisher of Omaha. He was an aircraft worker before entering the air force in February, 1943.

John S. Bunch, coxswain, has returned to the naval hospital in Asheville, North Carolina after spending a 25-day sick leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Bunch, 2612 10th Street.

Pvt. Dewey Powell, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Powell, 1615 W. 18th Street, will return today to Camp Hale, Colorado after spending a 14-day furlough with his parents.

Charles U. Hatt, seaman first class, has completed basic training at the submarine school in New London, Conn. Seaman Hatt was graduated from East High School a year ago and received his boot training at Farragut, Idaho. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Hatt, 1301 S. Cecelia Street.

Pauline J. Hutchmacher, yeoman third class, has reported for active duty to the bureau of ships, Washington, D.C. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M.A. Hutchmacher, 1712 W. First Street.

John H. Graham, 2312 S. Lakeport Street, recently was graduated from the Naval Training School at Iowa State College, Ames and received the rating of motor machinist mate third class. He is now awaiting further orders.

Pvt. Howard McWilliams is visiting his wife and children at 2802 W. Cottage Avenue, en route from Camp Lee, Virginia to Camp Beale, California.

Howard Bentzinger, aviation cadet, is receiving training at the naval flight preparatory school, Monmouth, Illinois. Cadet Bentzinger, together with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. O. A. Bentzinger, formerly of Sioux City and moved to San Francisco a few years ago. He recently spent a weekend here visiting friends.
