Sheldon, Iowa –Sergeant Clement D. Cardin, son of Mr. and Mrs. L.F. Cardin here has received the good conduct medal at Bergstrom Air Base, Austin, Texas. The ribbon is for a year of service with a rating of excellent as to conduct, character and efficiency. Sergeant Cardin recently completed a furlough at Sheldon and Sioux Falls. George Cardin, a brother, who has been with the social security offices in Washington and Chicago, has entered the service and is at Camp Walters, Texas.
Sheldon, Iowa –Lieut. K.W. Myers stationed at Kelly field, Texas, with the medical corps, arrived here for a furlough with his wife and family.

Sheldon, Iowa—Lieut. Robt Campbell, Sheldon, is with the airborne service at Fort Bliss, Texas.
Sheldon, Iowa—Paul McNutt is stationed at Topeka, Kansas with the army air-force and Merle McNutt is at the navy pier, Chicago. Both are sons of Mrs. Homer McNutt.
Sheldon, Iowa—lieut. Donald English serving with the tank corps of t he army arrived in Sheldon on a furlough to visit his parents, Dr. and Mrs. M. H. English.
Sheldon, Iowa—Ensign Freeman Merrill, Jr, is home on a furlough before leaving for sea duty.

Arnold Albert Grubel is one of several Sioux Cityans among the hundreds of men arriving daily at the Farragut Naval Training Station, Idaho. His wife resides at 3201 Fourth Avenue. Alvin Larson son of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Larson, 1917 W. Fourth Street, has been promoted from corporal to sergeant. Sergeant Larson is in North Africa.
Warren O’Harrow, 2316 S. Newton Street, was sworn into the air corps reserves recently at the Aloe Army airfield, Victoria, Texas. He will be called to pilot training after his 18th birthday anniversary. He is a graduate of East High School and for two months has been a member of the civilian air patrol, working as an apprentice mechanic for a coastal patrol unit operating out of Corpus Christi, Texas.
Aviation Cadet Maynard S. Ahrendt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Ahrendt, 5111 Stone Avenue, was graduated August 30 from the advanced flying school at Douglas, Ariz., and commissioned a second lieutenant in the air corps.
Aviation Cadet Darrell H. Anderson, 4201 Garretson Avenue, has been transferred from Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, to Southwest Missouri State College, Springfield.
Sarah J. Samore, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George E. Skaff, 921 Eighth Street, was promoted to sergeant while here attending her mother’s funeral. She learned here that her brother, Paul Skaff, was wounded during action in Sicily, August 4 and has been awarded the Purple Heart medal. Sergeant Samore left Sioux City Thursday for her Wac station at Daytona Beach, Florida.
Private F. Crawford (Bud) Steele, son of Mr. and Mrs. G.A. Steele, 1717 Myrtle Street, has completed a furlough at home and returned to Camp McCain, Mississippi.
Chief Machinist’s Mate Marvin J. Nordgren, who is serving his second enlistment and has been in the navy six and a half years, is stationed in the Pacific area. Arthur E. Nordgren, seaman first class, who has been in the navy a year and a half, also is stationed in the Pacific. Apprentice Seaman Robert O. Nordgren is taking boot training at Camp Waldron, Farragut, Idaho. All three are brothers and the sons of Mr. and Mrs. John Nordgren, 2501 First Street.
Howard V. Foote, son of Mr. and Mrs. B.M. Foote, 407 13th Street, was graduated from the Naval Training Station, Great Lakes, Illinois and advanced to the petty officer rating of gunners mate third class.
Corporal Richard E. Anderson, stationed somewhere in North Africa, heard a shortwave KSCJ broadcast according to word received from him by his mother, Mrs. William H. Anderson, 1802 Center Street.
Elroy R (Dick) Baker, son of Mrs. Lydia Baker, 610 ½ Pearl Street, has been promoted to the rank of first lieutenant. He is supervisor of the post bakery at Camp Phillips, Salina, Kansas, where he is stationed.
Robert Tysver, stationed somewhere in North Africa in the army air corps has distinguished himself by “exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service,” according to word received from Maj. George C. Deaton commander by Roberts his mother, Mrs. Blum, of George, Iowa, formerly Mrs. Louis Tysver of Sioux City.
Dwight F. Bergquist, private first class has returned to Seymour Johnson field, North Carolina, after spending a 10-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.H. Bergquist, 1309 28th Street.
Private Aleck Yarsevich who is stationed in the army air force quartermaster’s corps at Turno, California has been promoted to corporal. His wife lives at 1710 E. Sixth Street.
William “Bill” Thompson, seaman second class, is attending radar school at San Diego, California. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Thompson, former Sioux Cityans who now live in Seattle, Washington.
Seaman Second Class Madeline Sophie Maklebust, a member of the Waves, is attending store-keepers school at Milledgeville, Georgia. Miss Maklebust a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M.L. Maklebust, 609 S. Alice Street, enlisted last June.
Eugene J. Deurmeier, seaman second class is spending a 10-day leave from Farragut, Idaho, with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Deurmeier, 1929 W. Highland Street.
Private First Class Eugene E. Bingenheimer, son of John Bingenheimer, 4220 Tyler Street, who recently completed his basic training at Shepard field, Texas, is taking a five-month course for aircraft machinist at Chanute field, Illinois.
Sergeant Al Halpern, son of Samuel Halpern, 1312 Villa Avenue, has returned on an emergency 30-day furlough occasioned by the illness of his father. Sergeant Halpern has been stationed the last 15 months in the Hawaiian Islands.
Private John R. Mersch, formerly of Sioux City and Sheldon, Iowa is stationed at Las Vegas, Nevada, where he is attending school and is a member of the armament division. After completing the course, he will service machineguns on bombers. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Mersch, 1817 W. Second Street.

Willard Bryce Clayton, pharmacist’s mate third class, who is stationed in the navy at Farragut, Idaho, is spending a few days’ leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry L. Clayton, 3717 Stone Avenue.
Ray L. Connelly, seaman first class, has returned to his station at Scituate, Mass., after spending a week here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.O. Connelly, 1126 S. St. Mary’s Street. A brother, Eugene E. Connelly, is with the army air corps attending school at State College, Raleigh, North Carolina.
James A. Malone, son of Mr. and Mrs. James A. Malone, 3434 Davis Avenue, was advanced to the rank of corporal. He is serving as an aerial gunner at Columbia, South Carolina.
Seaman Second Class Robert L. Harling, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Harling, 2715 S. Lemon Street, arrived home on a leave from Camp Perry, Virginia, where he serves with the Seabees.
Seaman Second Class Patrick Eugene Hagerman, son of Mr. and Mrs. E.L. Hagerman, 3201 Orleans Avenue, is home on leave from Camp Hood, Farragut, Idaho, where he has completed his boot training.
Don L. Strong, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle F. Strong, 109 Isabella Street, has been promoted to rank of staff sergeant in the Marine Corps upon graduation from a course in radar at the naval aviation technical training center in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Private Alvin J. Feinberg, member of the boat building battalion of the amphibian engineers’ corps at Camp Edwards, Massachusetts, and son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Feinberg, 1523 Silver Street, was promoted to sergeant technician A brother, Private Willard Feinberg, is overseas with a Marine tank corps.
Lieut. Delmar Fodness, Lennox, South Dakota, a former student at Morningside College, is one of six new faculty members added to Missouri Military academy at Mexico, Missouri. He will be an instructor in manual arts and head football and basketball coach. He held a similar position last year in Holstein, Iowa schools.
Aviation Cadet Josiah A. Ringland, Jr. Sioux City recently completed the primary training course at the Brady Aviation School, Brady, Texas. He has been sent to the Garden City, Kansas army airfield for basic training.
Aviation Cadet Charles C. Joy, son of Mrs. Elmer M. Joy, 3122 Euclid Avenue, has completed nine weeks of basic flight training at the Coffeyville, Kansas army air field and has been transferred to Moore field, Mission, Texas for advanced single-engine training. In 1941 and 1942 he attended Compton Junior College.
Kean Lois Davenport, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Davenport, 3319 Orleans Avenue, reported August 25 at Fort Des Moines to begin training at the Wac center there.
Corporal Leonard C. Thorngren has returned to Lake Charles, La., where he is stationed, after spending a furlough with his wife, Grace, 312 W. Sixth Street and parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. S. Thorngren, 120 S. Cecelia Street.
Private James W. Dixon, army air corps, has returned to the University of Oregon, where he is studying meteorology, after spending a furlough with his parents Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Dixon, 304 Ninth Street.
Sergeant Anthony Pecewicz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Pecewicz, 3101 Correctionville Road, is home on furlough. He is stationed at Pueblo, Colorado where he is an engineer in the army air corps.
James H. Gerkin, seaman second class, who was graduated recently from recruit training at the Farragut, Idaho naval station, is spending a leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. V.T. Gerkin, 3910 Peters Avenue. Seaman Gerkin is a graduate of East High School.
Apprentice Seaman Alvin V. Dougherty, son of Mrs. Margaret Dougherty, Salix is home on leave from Farragut, Idaho, where he has completed “boot” training.
Lieut. And Mrs. Walter E. Arnett are parents of a son born recently at Oceanside, Oregon. Lieut. Arnett is the son of Mrs. Ethel Arnett, 2609 Correctionville Road and his wife is the daughter of Frank Hagey, 1124 15th Street.
Philip A. Donohue, 25, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Donohue, 3723 Jackson Street was commissioned a second lieutenant in the medical administrative corps at the Camp Barkeley officer candidate school graduation. He was granted a 10-day graduation leave before reporting to his first officer’s assignment.

Lieut. Kenneth E. Bailey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew J. Bailey, 1617 Ingleside Avenue, after nine weeks of intensive four-engine bomber training was graduated as a member of the first class of student officers from Liberal army air field, Liberal, Kansas.
Technical Sergeant Raymond C. Kozlowski has been promoted to master sergeant at the army air base in Salt Lake City, Utah, the base commander announced.
Eugene F. Steinkoenig, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Steinkoenig, was graduated recently from the aviation machinist’s mate school at the naval air station, Jacksonville, Florida. He enlisted in the Marine Corps December 8, 1942 and will probably serve with a marine aviation detachment.
Private William H. Schimatowsky, son of Mrs. Theresa H. Schimatowsky, 2617 S. Martha Street, was graduated recently from the clerical department of the armored school at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
Cadet John E. (Jack) Gilligan, 19, 2708 Virginia Street, is enrolled in a bombardier school at Santa Ana, California. At completion of the course, he will receive his “wings” and he later expects to take a course in advanced navigation and bombardiering. A son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gilligan, the young man entered the service January 31, 1943 and was first stationed at Iowa Teachers college at Cedar Falls as an aviation student. At time of enlisting he was a sophomore at Trinity College.
Sergeant Clayton Kamm, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. B.T. Kamm, 1024 S. Paxton Street, spent a furlough with his parents. He is stationed at a bomnardier School at Midland, Texas. He was a graduate from East High School in 1941. Private First Class Adolph Kamm, an uncle of Sergeant Kamm, was here on furlough to attend the funeral of his mother, Mrs. Laura Kamm. He is stationed with a coast artillery unit at Fort Worden, Washington.
Sergeant Robert C. Farb, chief radio operator, stationed at the army air base headquarters, Lincoln, Nebraska, was a holiday visitor in the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar M. Farb, 1308 S. Alice Street.
Alexander and Robert Huling, sons of Mrs. C.F. Huling, 2401 Nebraska Street, are spending a furlough here with their mother. Alexander has been attending the University of Utah, where he is taking specialized training in language. Robert is stationed in Arizona, where he is awaiting aviation cadet training.
George Ruben Hardy, quartermaster corps, has been temporarily promoted to first lieutenant, the war department announced Monday.
Clyde L. Ballard, son of Mr. and Mrs. E.F. Ballard, 3601 Fifth Avenue, who has been stationed at a Pennsylvania naval base, is spending a leave with friends and relatives here. He has completed a course in radio training and will be rated a petty officer third class. His wife, who has been living near the Pennsylvania base, has returned with him.

Akron, Iowa – Levetne H. Klemme, son of Mr. and Mrs. Emil F. Klemme, route 2, has been assigned for primary flight training at Corsicana field, Texas. He formerly was stationed at the San Antonio aviation cadet center.
Hawarden, Iowa – Cadet August H. Ykema, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ykema, has completed his basic flying training course at Marana army airfield, Tucson, Arizona. He will be sent to an advanced flying school to complete cadet training.
Holstein, Iowa – Corporal Edward Witt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Witt of Holstein, was one of five soldiers who received recognition from the war department for bravery in action. They rescued the crew of a bomber which had crashed into a parked plane, exploded and burned on a Tunisian airfield. Corporal Witt is attached to a medical corps in North Africa.
Alta, Iowa – Maj. Donald L. Clark, son of Mr. and Mrs. L.A. Clark, has reported to the army air force bombardment base at will Rogers field, Oklahoma. He first was commissioned at Kelly field May 25, 1939 and was promoted to the rank of major November 15, 1942. He received his R.O.T.C. training at Iowa State College and Iowa University.
Estherville, Iowa – First Lieut. Clarence S. Lewis, United States army, former chief clerk in the division freight agent’s office Rock Island railway here, has been transferred from Lima tank depot, Lima, Ohio to a port of embarkation.
Estherville, Iowa – Radio Technician A.J. Oswait of Key West, Florida, is visiting his wife at Fairmont, Minnesota and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Oswalt and other relatives in the Dolliver, Iowa vicinity.
Estherville, Iowa – Lieut. Leonard Larson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Larson of Wallingford, has been promoted to the rank of captain. Capt. Larson recently was transferred from Camp Roberts, California to New York City. He formerly practiced dentistry at Spencer, Iowa before induction into the service.
Estherville, Iowa- Mr. and Mrs. L.N. Boone here have received word of the arrival in Pueblo, Colorado, of their son Lloyd, Jr., lieutenant in the air corps, who had been visiting here while on leave, Lieut. Boone has been piloting four-engine bombers.

Sloan, Iowa – Harold Abbott, recently promoted to private first class in the army air forces at the Antilles air command headquarters, San Juan, Puerto Rico, is stationed at a South American air base guarding the vital approaches to the Caribbean. A native of Sergeant Bluff, he is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James W. Abbott of Sloan.
Correctionville, Iowa- Private First Class Walter R. Tincher, stationed at the army air base at Herington, Kansas, has arrived for a nine-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Tincher.
Correctionville, Iowa- Corporal Robert A. Brink, son of Mrs. Minnie Brink, is home on a 15-day furlough. He is stationed at Patterson field, Fairfield, Ohio.
Akron, Iowa—Sergeant James R. Sweeney has returned to Camp Toccoa, Georgia, after having been called home by the serious illness of his mother, Mrs. Thomas H. Sweeney.

Sioux Rapids, Iowa—Private First Class Tommy Grote and Mrs. Grote have arrived from Madison, Wisconsin for a 14-day furlough with relatives. He is the son of Mrs. Louisa Grote.
Sioux Rapids, Iowa-- Private First Class Dell Agnew and Mrs. Agnew of Fort Sill, Oklahoma, are visiting relatives here.
Sioux Rapids, Iowa—Private Fred Menefee, son of Mr. and Mrs. O.L. Menefee, has arrived from Buckley field, Colorado, on a 15-day emergency furlough because of the death of his sister, La Vonne.
Sioux Rapids, Iowa—Capt. And Mrs. Ervin Anderson have arrived from Fort Devens, Massachusetts, for a visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F.E. Anderson. He has been stationed at the Lowell General Hospital and is now reporting to a new station at Camp Gordon, Georgia.
Sioux Rapids, Iowa-- Aviation Cadet Harvey L. Willard, 21, Sioux Rapids, has arrived at Perrin field, Texas for training. Cadet Willard is the son of Mrs. Jennie Willard.
Sioux Rapids, Iowa-- Corporal Jerry Lopour, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Lopour, has been promoted to sergeant. He is stationed at Fort Pierce, Florida.
Sioux Rapids, Iowa-- Corporal Wayne Remillard, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jess Remillard, has been transferred to Nashville, Tennessee.
Sioux Rapids, Iowa—Corporal Emery Stone has been transferred to Camp Livingston, Louisiana.
Sioux Rapids, Iowa—Private First Class Wendell C. Simonson, son of Mrs. Emma Simonson, has passed tests for the army specialists’ training program and will begin an 18-month course in engineering soon.
Storm Lake, Iowa – Bob Rukes veteran of several sea battles, has concluded his first leave here since he enlisted in the navy two years ago. He came here from San Francisco, California after seven continuous months at sea. Rukes, a seaman first class is a nephew of Mr. and Mrs. John O’Neil.
Storm Lake, Iowa – Paul Belcher, who fought through eight sea battles in the South Pacific, has been advanced to the rank of pharmacist mate first class. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Belcher.
Storm Lake, Iowa – Vernon Sievers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Sievers, has graduated from the Freeman airfield at Seymour, Indiana and commissioned a second lieutenant in the army air corps. He was inducted into the army July 14, 1942.
Albert City, Iowa – Corporal Irvin C. Blomgren writes from Australia that the weather is getting warm again after being “very cold.” He has been stationed in Australia for seven months.

John A. Rispalje, a former member of the Sioux City police department, has been promoted to specialist second class. He is serving with the coast guard at Portsmouth, Ohio.
Ted H. Walensky, son of Mr. and Mrs. Grant T. Walensky, 4334 County Club Boulevard, is recovering from a minor operation in the navy hospital at Parris Island, South Carolina, where he is training in the Marine Corps.
Private First Class Nile H. Marsh, army air corps, returned Sunday night to his station at Fort Sumner, New Mexico, after a furlough spent with his family 1222 Jackson Street.
Paul Carlson of the army air corps has completed a six week course at the gunner’s school at Panama City, Florida and has been promoted to the rank of sergeant. He was presented his silver wings and won a marksmanship medal. Sergeant Carlson was transferred to Salt Lake City where he will be assigned to a squadron. His wife resides at 414 ½ Main Street and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Coleman at 415 W. 18th Street.
Corporal Robert Albert, son of Mrs. Betsy Albert, 5207 Stone Avenue, is home on furlough from Brooks field, Texas, where he is a member of the ground crew with the army air forces.
Private Charles Gilson, 1505 W. 29th Street, has arrived home after receiving a medical discharge from the army at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas.
Earlow A. Lobb, coxswain, son of Mrs. Mary Lobb, 215 22d Street, is visiting his wife at 1811 Palmer Street. He is stationed at Norfolk, Virginia.
Tommy M. Schroeder, aviation ordnance man third class in the navy, has completed a course in aerial gunnery at Hollywood and Lake City, Florida and is spending a leave with his mother, Mrs. Pauline Schroeder, 706 Rebecca Street. He will report at Alameda, California for further assignment.
Private Dan Haviland, son of Mrs. Jack Newman, 410 13th Street is home from Fort Jackson, South Carolina, on furlough. He is attached to the station hospital.
Sergeant Edward P. Siekaniec, stationed at Camp Phillips, Kansas, is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter E. Siekaniec, 2609 Macomb Avenue. He was accompanied here by his wife who resides in Salina, Kansas. A brother, Sergeant Carl J. Siekaniec, who visited here recently, has returned to Camp Campbell, Kentucky.
Aviation Cadet Joseph A. Ringland, Jr., 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Ringland, 2109 Palmetto Street, has completed flight training at Curtis field, Brady, Texas and is at the Garden City, Kansas army airfield for basic training. He attended Morningside College two years, making a varsity letter in track.
B.W. Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. F.E. Johnson, 3515 Orleans Avenue and a graduate of East High School, has enlisted in the navy V-5 program at Kansas City.
Private Harold A. Grubel will return to Camp Mackall Wednesday after a furlough spent with his mother, Mrs. H. Grubel, 3201 Fourth Avenue place, and his wife at 1213 S. Alice Street.
Robert J. Betz, seaman second class, has returned to the naval station at Farragut, Idaho, after spending a furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.H. Betz, 2729 Second Street.

Emmetsburg, Iowa – Leonard Appleguist of Swea City, a former Emmetsburg merchant, reported missing in action in July, is alive and a prisoner of Germans, according to a message received by his parents through the International Red Cross. Applequist was a gunner on a bomber.
Emmetsburg, Iowa—Bernard Cahill, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Cahill of Emmetsburg, has been awarded the Legion of Merit for meritorious service in battle, according to word received here by his parents. He went with the 34th division to North Africa. Mr and Mrs. Cahill have two other sons in service, Tommy, who is on a destroyer and Joseph who is in training at Camp Barkley, Texas.
Ringsted, Iowa—Lieut. Matt Munson, formerly a veterinary here, now is in north Africa. He moved from here to Hubbard, Iowa, where his wife and four children now reside.
Ringsted, Iowa—Private Jerome K. Paulson, son of Mr. and Mrs. S. G. Paulson, now located with an ordnance unit in the south, is home on furlough.
Sanborn, Iowa – Private First Class William Zabelka, Jr., of the army air corps, formerly stationed at Lowry field, Colorado, has been transferred to Santa Ana, California. He is the son of Rev. and Mrs. William Zabilka.
Sanborn, Iowa—Private Elliot Sheeley of Camp Hood, Texas, enjoyed a furlough here with his wife, in the home of her father, John Nissen.

Sanborn, Iowa—Rudolph Larson has been sworn into the army. He has a 15-week military scholarship at Ames and is in the army special training reserve program.

Estherville, Iowa—Capt. William N. Deming of the marine air corps, stationed in the south Pacific area, has written his sisters, Mrs. James Baldwin and Miss Georgia Deming, Estherville, that6 he suffered a broken arm while in combat and because of a wing being shot off his ship, was compelled to bail out on August 12. At a mobile navy hospital where Deming was taken he met Bob Chalberg, an attendant at the hospital, also from Estherville.
Hospers, Iowa – Private First Class Gerald Oldenkamp left for Camp Gruber, Oklahoma, after enjoying an eight day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gerrit Oldenkamp.
Hospers, Iowa—Mr. and Mrs. Jack Wiese have received word from their son, Corporal Jack Wiese, Jr., that he has been transferred from a camp in California to Camp Polk, Louisiana.

Hospers, Iowa—Private Richard Landman and Arie Brink arrived home to visit their parents, Mr. and Mrs. K. Landman and Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Brink. They will leave Sunday for a camp in California being transferred there from Camp Walters, Texas.
Maple Hill, Iowa—Memorial services for Sergeant Allen Berven, son of Mrs. Marie Berven of Maple Hill, will be held in the Lutheran church at Wallingford next Sunday with Rev. L.G. Hinderaker officiating. Sergeant Berven was killed in action August 7, in the North African area according to advices from the war department. He was born April 23, 1923, attended the Maple Hill schools and would have graduated with the 1942 class had he not enlisted on November 12, 1941. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Marie Berven, Maple Hill, two brothers, Martin of Chokio, Minnesota and Oscar of Granada, Minnesota and one sister, Mrs. Earl Carlson of Chokio.

Donald Gardner, of Camp Ward, Farragut, Idaho, spent last week with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jake Gardner.
Richard Frevert has recently been commissioned a second lieutenant and came from Chicago to visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Frevert, before he left for Oregon where he is stationed in the weather wing of the air corps.
Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Ackerson have heard that their son, Staff Sergeant LeRoy Ackerson is with General Douglas MacArthur’s headquarters and her recently been transferred from Australia to New Guinea.
Sergeant Arnold Schrooten of Camp Carson, Colorado, spent last week with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Schrooten.
Earl McFarland of Kingsville, Texas, is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl McFarland, Sr.
Mr. and Mrs. E.A. Vernia have received word that their son, Merle J. Vernia, has graduated from the Private First Class school at Keesler Field, Biloxi, Liberator bomber mechanics Miss.
Adair Man, yeoman third class, of San Francisco, California, is visiting his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. August Man. He has been assigned to submarine duty and will go from here to New London, Conn.
Mrs. George Kessler has received a letter from her nephew, Corporal Leonard Ellis, from Sicily. He has recently been in Africa.
M.L. Huglin, machinists mate first class, is in the federal hospital at Long Beach, California after being injured while working with a construction battalion.

Private First Class Fay Moore of Elgin Field, Florida, has been visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Moore, while on furlough.
Lieut. Robert R. Sorenson of the army air corps and Mrs. Sorenson have been home while Lieut. Sorenson was on furlough.
Frank Woodbeck, seaman first class, has been home on leave. He left a west coast port in March 1942 and this is his first visit to the mainland since that date. Woodbeck has three service ribbons, the American defense service medal, American area campaign medal, and the Asiatic-Pacific area campaign medal, with four stars.

Donald A. York, seaman second class, has returned to Farragut, Idaho after a 15-day leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert York.
Arnolds Park, Iowa—
A ribbon in lieu of a good conduct medal, has been presented to Private First Class Ross Allen of a bakery company, by his commanding officer, Col. A.D. Cowley. The medal was one of 10 given at a single ceremony recently. Mrs. C.B. Elston of Arnolds Park is his mother.

Sergeant William Zabilka, Jr. son of Rev. and Mrs. William Zabilka, is stationed at Yuma, Ariz. Air base doing clerical work.
Aviation Cadet Marcus Cavanaugh has been transferred from San Marcos, Texas to San Antonio, Texas for primary flight training.
Sergeant Ogden Childers with an engineer’s battalion, has been transferred from Camp Barkeley, Texas to Camp Grannett, California. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. P.A. Childers.
Jean Vander Wande, seaman second class is attending ordnance school at Norman, Oklahoma.
Corporal Technician Delbert Johnston, a baker, is in North Africa.
Leonard Foley, in the army stationed at Camp Robinson, Arkansas, ranks as a corporal technician. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Foley.
Marion Walthinzen, son of Mrs. Ida Walthinzen, now ranks as corporal and is stationed at the air base at Waycross, Ga.
James Hakeman of the navy is taking basic training at Tucson, Ariz. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Hakeman.
Corporal Alden C. Smith of Fort Knox, Kentucky, is spending a furlough visiting his wife and son.
Aviation Cadet Ralph DeVall, stationed at San Antonio, Texas has been transferred to the British ferry command. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Otis DeWall.

Theodore Feenstra, who has been stationed at Camp Roberts, California, received an honorable discharge because of a minor disability.

Second Lieut. Richard Charles Holman, son of Mrs. Mildred T. Holman, 1409 Villa Avenue, has completed a pilot transition course at army airfield at Hobbs, New Mexico and is a qualified combat pilot. He was commissioned May 20 at Williams field, Arizona.
Michael George Norgelas, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Charles Norgelas, 1018 Grand Avenue, has completed 16 weeks of instruction at the United States Naval Training School for electricians at Purdue University, Lafayette, Indiana. He awaits assignment with the fleet or at a shore station.
Melvin Knoernschild, son of Mr. and Mrs. A E. Knoernschild, 2221 Roosevelt Street, is in training at the United States Naval Training Station at Farragut, Idaho.
Alfred F. Albert, 1104 23d Street, has been commissioned a second lieutenant in the coast artillery corps at the antiaircraft School, Camp Davis, North Carolina.
Winnifred B. Brennan, 23, sister of Mary I McNally, 720 18th Street, Hs been given active duty orders with the Waves upon graduation from the United States naval training school for storekeepers on the campus of Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana.

Martin Kronick, 1100 Jennings Street, is a member of a recent graduating class of the chemical warfare service officer’s candidate school at Edgewood arsenal, Maryland, and has been commissioned a second lieutenant.
Aviation Cadet Vernon A. Montrose, son of Louis Montrose, 613 Center Street, has reported to the Greenville, Miss., army airfield for further flight training.
