Cpl. Merle M. Bolton, of Camp Phillips, Salina, Kansas, arrived Wednesday to spend a fifteen-day furlough in the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George E. Bolton, of Kingsley.
Kenneth Schweitzberger came home this week from Camp Butner, North Carolina, on a week’s furlough, to visit with his mother and other relatives and friends at Kingsley.
Cpl. Vernon Hatz’ last letter came from far-off Bend, Oregon. Vernon, transferred but two weeks ago from Barksdale Field, La., to a wilderness camp near Bend, was given a furlough unexpectedly when other, living on the eastern coast, were unable to take advantage of the offer. Vernon has been in the army 15 months and now is in communications service, operating the teletype. The present camp at Bend is in the woods, he says, and the boys will go on maneuvers within the next two weeks. He is scheduled to depart for Oregon next Wednesday. Vernon is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Hatz of Remsen.
Sgt. Lester Nitzschke, son of Mr.. and Mrs. Paul Nitzschke, of Remsen, arrived home Friday from the army air base at Greenville, S.C. On the following day his cousin, Pvt. Lloyd Nitzschke, also in the army and a son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Nitzschke, arrived from Nashville, Tenn. Neither knew the other was given furlough, and the boys are enjoying their visits among families and friends. They were granted 15-day furloughs, so will be here until early next week.
Lieut. Neil McLane, of Camp Wolters, Texas, is spending a leave in Akron with his wife and children and other relatives and friends.
Sgt. and Mrs. Bob Kellen arrived Wednesday from Camp Gruber, Oklahoma, to spend a week with Sgt. Kellen’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Kellen and family of Remsen. The couple was married at Muskogee, Oklahoma, on August 21.
Pvt. Darvin J.. Hartman arrived in Hinton by plane from New Orleans, La., where he is training for the Army Transport Corps. He was called home on an emergency furlough August 11, because of the serious burns his father received by a gas explosion. Pvt. Hartman has been training at Camp Siebert, Alabama, with the Chemical Warfare Service but was transferred to New Orleans, La., several days before coming home. He has to report back to duty early in September.
Seaman Odie Herbst arrived the last of the week and is spending a furlough visiting his wife and at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gus Herbst at Hinton.
Pvt. Lavern R. Walsh, a link trainer at the U.S. Army air base at Muroe, Calif., just spent a ten-day furlough at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Walsh. He returned to his base Saturday morning.
Robert Walsh, who returned to Farragut, Idaho, two weeks ago, after spending a 15-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Walsh, has been transferred to Camp Peterson, Farragut, where he will attend radio school.
Sgt. Nick Coad returned to Camp Phillips, Kansas, Saturday, after spending a short furlough with his mother, Mrs. W.A. Coad. Nick is in the medical detachment.
Pfc. Chan Pitts arrived home Sunday evening for a week’s furlough from Washington D.C. where he is stationed at Georgetown University.
Lt. Robt. Roseberry will return to Luke Field, Phoenix, Arizona, Tuesday morning, after spending a short furlough in the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Roseberry. Bob is a pilot in the air corps and received his wings Monday, August 30.
