Bertram De Lancy Howard (Bert) was born November 23, 1894, a rural Ireton, Iowa, son of John W. and Ida A. (Cook) Howard. He had one sister, Grace, and three brothers, Chandos, Clayton, and Lester. They all attended a county school in district 9 in Sioux County.
In 1918 he married Johanna Margaret Kamp. After their marriage he entered World War I, was stationed in France. He returned home in 1920, rented a farm in Westfield township four miles southeast of Akron. He farmed for 27 years. He bought an acreage in 1947 in the southwest part of Akron. He worked for Avery Small and Earl Westadt running a corn sheller. In 1952 they moved to Sioux City, Iowa, where he was employed at Central West Cold Storage, as an engineer. August 11, 1957, his wife, Johanna Margaret (Kamp) Howard passed away. Bert returned to Akron to his acreage in 1959. He was farming his acreage at the time of his death on July 29, 1978.
