A Letter Home

France, Aug 10, 1918

Dear folks at home:
Will write you a few lines to let you know I am still on top of the sod, and feeling fine. We are having dandy weather here at present. It sure looks like sunny France. And the days are sure long. It doesn’t get dark until about 9:30 o’clock.

We are still at the same old trade. Ellsworth Alderson got the Strawberry Point Press and the Elkader paper today. It was an old paper though, June 27 but it was good to read. I did not get mine. Will you tell Mr. Clark to send mine and Ellsworth’s to Co. B instead of Co. A.

I was down town last Sunday and these are some places believe me. They look like they were laid out about one hundred years before Christ was born. The streets are narrow, about room for one team or rather one horse to pass another. And you can’t walk more than 8 or 10 rods in a straight line on a street when you zigzag around and you don’t know if you are on a street or not. If anyone gets out of this they sure will have something to talk about, although we will all be glad when we get back to God’s country. I suppose we would like it a little better if we could talk French.

I expect by the time you get this they will be done threshing there, and the next will be corn cutting time.

I will try and finish my letter tonight as it is now Aug 15. Have just made another move. We have seen quite a lot of France already, but I want to see Paris yet. Then I will be ready to leave France any time they see fit to let me go.

I am still feeling fine and so are the rest of the Strawberry Point boys. There seems to be quite a nice climate here. Have not had much rain lately.

You will have to excuse these short letters as I don’t know what to write. Tell the rest hello and write and let me know where Elwin is and how you are getting along.
