Townships
Boone County was established January 13, 1846, from free land. It was named after Captain Nathan Boone, son of Daniel Boone, an American pioneer, who had formed the Wilderness Trail and founded the town Boonesborough, Kentucky. Located in central Iowa, the county has a total area of 574 square miles, of which 571 square miles is land and 2 square miles is water. The county is divided up into 17 townships (Amaqua, Beaver, Cass, Colfax, Des Moines, Dodge, Douglas, Garden, Grant, Harrison, Jackson, Marcy, Peoples, Pilot Mound, Union, Worth and Yell) and has ten incorporated towns in its borders: Beaver, Berkley, Boone, Boxholm, Fraser, Luther, Madrid, Ogden, Pilot Mound and Sheldahl. The county seat is Boone. Boone County is bordered by Webster County to the northwest, Hamilton County to the northeast, Story County to the east, Polk County to the southeast, Dallas County to the south, and Greene County to the west.
