In Response To: Overackers (Karleen Noteboom)

I located Simeon's two obituaries along with a little information on his brother, Henry Overacker.

January 7, 1818 ---- December 30, 1886

OVERACKER — In Clarion, Iowa. Dec. 30th, 1886.
Simeon Overacker, aged 68 years, 11 months and 23 days. From a memoranda made by Mr. Overacker just prior to his last sickness we learn that he was born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, Jan. 7th 1818, and twelve years later he moved with his parents to Michigan, where he resided until the spring of 1857, when he moved to Iowa, locating at Belmond, in this county. He was married to Miss Caroline Paddock at Waterloo, Michigan, October 19th, 1841. He enlisted in the 32d Iowa Infantry Aug. 14, 1862, and was discharged on the 25th of the following July on account of having contracted disease that rendered him unfit for service, and most of the time since he has been a resident of this county. For a number of years he had been in poor health the greater portion of the time, being afflicted with a cancer in the throat and also a disease of the lungs. As a citizen and neighbor Mr. Overacker was above reproach; that he had failings cannot be denied, but in this respect he was no worse off than his neighbors, therefore let us all bear in mind the good qualities of the departed and forget the errors common to the living. In charge of the G.A.R Post the remains were taken to Belmond on Friday and buried in the cemetery beside those of a son who died some years since. Another old settler and soldier gone to that bourne from whence no traveler returns. Peace to his ashes.

*****
Mr. Simeon Overacker died last Thursday morning. His disease was consumption. Mr. Overacker was one of the early settlers of this part of the county, was a member of the G. A. R. Clarion Post. He had reached three score years and over, and for many years had been a member of the Methodist church, he lived to see all his children grown and married except one boy. The remains were taken to Belmond on Friday for interment.

History of Wright County, Iowa, its peoples, industries and institutions, B F Bowen & Company, Indianapolis, Indiana, 1915, page 67:

"Roads at this early day consisted of mere tracks, the route being decided by the first teamster who happened to pass that way. Bridges there were none, the streams being forded where encountered, and marshes avoided as best the unfortunate could. For several years the road from Belmond to Horse Grove was east of and around Franklin Grove, a distance of about fifteen miles, nearly double the length of the course pursued by a crow passing between the same points. The nearest supply store was that of Boriah Weight, at Hardin City, where most of the mail was received until that town went into decline, after which, for a long time, Cedar Falls became the popular trading point and post office. For a long time Simeon Overacker carried the mail on foot, receiving therefore five dollars per trip, which amount was donated by the individuals of the settlement."

Life and death in old envelopes by Janet Brigham [regarding Overacker family]

The “Declaration for an Original Pension
of a Mother [Caroline Paddock Overacker]” from February 1886 indicated that Simeon [Overacker], age 68, was a “permanent invalid,” unable to perform manual labor. She wrote: “My husband has never abandoned me nor failed to support me to the best of his ability from the time of our marriage up to the present but failing health and the infirmities of age...render it no longer possible.” She listed the full names and birth dates of her other children born by 1862. A son Albert G. Overacker, listed as “a babe” born in 1862, wrote a letter in 1927 to inquire about his father’s military records; the letter was included in the file. “Our family has been supposed to be at least 100% loyal to our country,” Albert wrote. Also included with the file was an affidavit from two persons (one being Caroline’s sister) who were present at Simeon’s and Caroline’s marriage ceremony. This not only expanded the documentation about them, but expanded our knowledge of Caroline’s family of origin. The file also contained the marriage certificate, a list of Simeon’s real estate, and his December 1886 death certificate. Without the pension application file, we had known little about the family. Now we had documentation of life events and a framework for understanding their lives. A separate file was equally rich with detail about the life, service, and death of Henry Overacker, Simeon’s brother, who enlisted in 1861 and died two years later of dysentery at Memphis, Tennessee. Henry’s file is complex because his widow remarried, and had to prove not only that she and Henry had been married, but also that she received no other pension from subsequent marriages. As with the file for Cassius and Simeon, the file materials from Henry’s survivors contained names, birth dates, residences, and other life details."
