In Response To: Tabe Loats (Tina Corbin)

Tabe Loats and Myrtle Johnson were married on 30 November 1893 at German Valley, Kossuth County, Iowa. Kossuth County marriage records record his father as John Nannenga and his mother as M. Loots. 1900 Kossuth County Census records record his date of immigration from Germany as 1874.

My research shows that his mother was Meike Loats who was also known as Merke, Maike, Maika and Martha in various records with a surname of Lootz, Loets, Loats. Hardin County, Iowa marriage records on 10 September 1876 record her marriage to Heyo Boekelman. In the 1880 Etna, Hardin County, Iowa census, Heijo Boekelman (age 40); Maika (age 35); Tabbe Boekelman (age 8) and two additional children ages 3 and 1 are enumerated. In the 1885 census for Ramsey Township, Kossuth County, Iowa the Boekelman family with Tebbe, age 13 is residing next door to T. Lots (age 68 and Samina Lots (age 69); In 1900 German Township, Kossuth County census, Heio Boekelman (February 1840, Germany, Margaret Boekelman (September 1844, Germany) are enumerated. Margaret was the mother of 7 children/7 living; Residing with the family is mother-in-law, Lannia Loets, born October 1814 in Germany. Lannia [Samina] was the mother of 5 children/3 living; Margaret Boekelman and Lannia Loets both show 1874 as the date of immigration.

Immigration records:
Hohenzollern from Bremen, Germany arriving in New York on May 27, 1874: Tebte Loets, 56; Minna Loets, 56; Meike Loets, 29; Tebte Loets 9 months; Wilhelm Loets 19;

This is what I surmise -- Meike Loats was born December 3, 1844 in Germany to Tebte and Samina Loats. She had a son, Tabe Loats whose father was John Nannenga or Mennenga. Tabe, his mother and grandparents and uncle Wilhelm emigrated from Bremen, Germany arriving in New York on May 27, 1874. They immediately went to Etna Township, Hardin County, Iowa where Meike married Heyo Boekelman on September 10, 1876 and where they lived until about 1883 when they moved and are enumerated in 1885 in Kossuth County, Iowa. Meike Loats Boekelman died in Buffalo Center, Winnebago County, Iowa on March 10, 1915.

I located obituaries for both Tabe Loats and Meike Loats Boekelman which follow. Tabe's obituary mentions half brothers.:

Laid to Rest Friday of last week

Tab Loats, Former Citizen of German Township, and Well Known Here, Passes to Reward

Tab Loats, whom we mentioned in last week's paper as passing away at Belmond after a short illness, was buried Friday at the German Reformed church cemetery in German township. Mr. Loats, who was for a number of years one of the prominent farmers of his township, and who was well known by many readers of this paper, had for years been
troubled with asthma. It was this disease that caused his death. He remained on the farm as long as his health would permit, after which he sold out and moved to Buffalo Center and went into the livery business. A year ago he sold out his business at Buffalo Center and bought a restaurant and hotel business at Wesley. Sunday a week ago Mr. Loats and family drove to Belmond to visit relatives. While there he took violently ill and after a brief illness passed away Tuesday night of last week.

Tab Loats was born in Oestfriesland, Germany, Nov. 11, 1871. He came to this country when two years of age with his parents. He was married to Miss Myrtle Johnson on November 30, 1893. To this union ten children were born, three of whom died in infancy. His wife and seven children are left to mourn his departure. Besides his children, Heiyo, Thomas, Mrs. Earl Goodnow, Myrtle, Minnie, Johanna and Tabbie he leaves six half-brothers and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at the German Reformed church of German township last Friday, of which he was a member, conducted by Rev. G. Haken, pastor of the church; after which the remains were laid to rest in the church cemetery. Tab Loats was well known, had made many friends, was a devoted husband, and was kind and considerate to his children. The Topic extends its sincerest condolence to the family in their bereavement.

Mrs. Boekelman

Last week we mentioned briefly the death of Mrs. Heyo Boekelman at her home in this city. We have since secured the following sketch of her: Meike Loats was born in Kritzam Germany, December 3, 1844, and came to America at an early age. On September 10, 1876, she was united in marriage to Heyo Bokelman at Cleves, Iowa, and thirty-two years ago moved to Kossuth county, residing near Titonka. Twelve years ago they came to Buffalo Center. After a sickness of only six days she died March 10, 1915, of heart trouble. Deceased was 70 years, six months and 7 days old at the time of her death; Mr. Boekelman died February 11, 1911. She leaves seven children, one sister and nineteen grandchildren to mourn her loss. Funeral services were held at German Reformed church conducted by Rev. J. Schoon Saturday, March 13, and remains of a loving mother, kind neighbor and friend were laid to rest at beautiful Graceland cemetery. Those from out of town who were present at the funeral were Mrs. Loats, Fred Loats of Belmond; Tab Seitsema of Ackley and Telka Seitsema, Titonka.
