OSCAR R. MYERS
A well-known farmer and probably the most extensive dealer in livestock of Wright county, Iowa, or the vicinity, is Oscar R. Myers, who was born in Wheatland, Will county, Illinois, on September 8, 1869, he being the son of Jacob and Elvina (Rhodes) Myers, the former a native of Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, and the latter a native of Dayton, Ohio. Jacob and Elvina Myers, who lived in Will county, Illinois, until their death, were the parents of ten children, of whom Oscar R. is the youngest and the only one living in Wright county.
Oscar R. Myers was educated in the country schools of his native county, after which he worked on the home farm for some years and then came to Wright county, where he rented the farm for a short time upon which he now lives and which subsequently was given to Mrs. Myers by her father. To this farm Oscar R. Myers has added seventy and one-half acres in section 36, Grant township, and eighty more acres, at a later time, in the same township; on which land Mr. Myers conducts a well-known and high-class stock farm, given to the breeding of purebred and registered barred Plymouth Rock chickens, Poland China hogs, Polled Durham and Shorthorn cattle, and Percheron and standard-bred horses. The quality of the stock on the farm of Oscar R. Myers is widely known, he for some years winning numerous prizes at various county fairs and livestock expositions, as well as securing record prices for the stock which he has placed on the market. Mr. Myers is prominently connected in the livestock world, being a member of the Percheron Society of America and the Poland China Association of America.
On February 7, 1895, in Will county, Illinois, Oscar R. Myers was married to Nellie J. Gurney, who was born in Will county, Illinois, on May 27, 1872, the daughter of George and Eliza (Brydon) Gurney, natives of Gloucestershire and Liverpool, England, respectively. Oscar R. and Nellie Myers are the parents of three children: Gurney, who was born on October 15, 1904, and who died on April 30, 1905; Arno, who was born on August 27, 1907; and Brydon, born on September 19, 1910.
Oscar R. Myers is prominently affiliated in fraternal circles, being a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons and of the Modern Woodmen of America. Politically, Mr. Myers is a Republican, although he has preferred not to be an office holder.
The life and business of Oscar R. Myers is one of the valued assets of Wright county, he being a man who has taken no small part in the development of the county and its resources. As a man and a citizen Mr. Myers is respected and honored by all for his unquestioned dealings and for his interest in the progress of the locality and its affairs.
