Sandra (“Fanny” or “Fan” to family and friends) was born in Correctionville to Norma L. (Fitch) Mathers and Wayne D. Mathers on Oct. 2, 1945, the first of 11 children. She grew up in rural Correctionville and graduated from Correctionville high school in 1964. She attended Westmar College in LeMars for a year, and married Kenneth G. Conner (deceased in 2021) in 1965. From this marriage came two beloved daughters, Kerri and Amy.

Sandra and Kenny eventually divorced, and Sandra married Thomas D. Volkert in 1985. The couple successfully blended their families, including Tom’s children Cheri, Dan, Teri and Crystal.

Over the course of her adulthood, Sandra worked in part-time positions as a convenience store clerk, seamstress, waitress and real estate agent. She was great at every job she ever held, but she truly excelled at tasks involving homemaking and caring for the people around her. She was a master at cooking, baking, cleaning, hosting, sewing and all the other chores that make a house a home, and the people within it feel cherished and well cared for. Sandra was also active in the local chapter of the Women’s Auxiliary.

Sandra is survived by her husband, Tom; daughters Kerri (Conner) Jepsen and Amy (Conner) Boos of Sioux City; stepdaughter Cheri (Mike) Prange of Spencer, stepson Dan (Michelle) Volkert of Correctionville, stepdaughter Teri (Justin) Chinn of Fostoria and stepdaughter Crystal (Brent) Renken of St. Joseph, Michigan. She is also survived by sisters Loretta (Mathers) Hansen and Kim Mathers of Sioux City; sisters Susan (Robert) Mohr, Nancy Mathers (Jim Morgan), Kristin Mathers (Randy Hansen) of Correctionville; brothers Bruce (Dyane) Mathers, and Mark (Carla) Mathers of Correctionville; brother Brian (Jose Huerta), of Chapala, Mexico; sisters-in-law Patsy Mathers of Correctionville, Gwen Mathers of Buffalo, Wis., and Dana (Vic) Olson of Colorado Springs; brother-in-law Jon (Guyla) Volkert of Chicago; 15 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Sandra was preceded in death by her parents and parents-in-law; two brothers, David and Steve Mathers; a nephew, Nicklas Mathers; and a niece, Jamie (Mohr) Ummach.
