Dale Gene Petersen, 75, of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, entered this life on November 25, 1949, the seventh child and sixth son of Hugo and Esther (Kroeger) Petersen in Carroll, Iowa. He left his earthly home on Sunday, January 13th, four days after his initial diagnosis of multiple myeloma. God released Dale from his pain, as he was surrounded by friends and family. His wife sang him into heaven.
Dale graduated from Sac City High School at the top of his class and attended Mankato State University prior to enlistment into the Army in 1970. His military career spanned almost 25 years and he worked with dignity and competence in both his career and his service to his community.
Dale served the Army in Ordinance before he was appointed shop supervisor for the Army maintenance garage in Sioux City, a position he continued to hold until his retirement as a private citizen. Dale lived a life of service to his God, his family, and his country. Dale was the #1 supporter of all things Sergeant Bluff. He began his first term on the City Council in 1984. He served three terms as Mayor of Sergeant Bluff. The projects completed during his term included both residential and commercial development. Dale also served as President of Kiwanis, Co-Chair of Helping Hands and for over twenty years until his death as Chairman of the Administrative Council at Community United Methodist Church. Dale remodeled the parsonage, the kitchen and the bathrooms of the church.
In October 1971, Dale married Suzanne Weitzel and to this union a single beloved son was born, Aaron Lee Petersen. On August 12, 2000, Dale married the love of his life, Ann Krell Petersen and gained two more children, Andy Moon Wilson and Kelly Wilson Bossley. His stepchildren joined what became a complete family with three children and a wife who loved him beyond measure. Six grandchildren followed, Ellie, Noah and Hudson Petersen, Oliver Moon Wilson and twins, Lydia and Nolan Bossley
Dale was preceded in death by his sister Ruth and two of his five brothers, Roger Petersen and Gene Petersen. He leaves behind three brothers, Alton Petersen, Gary Petersen and Steve Petersen, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Dale was a true Renaissance man; a master woodworker, a gourmet chef, a golf fanatic, and a lover of his yellow convertible Corvette. He had recently completed, along with his son Aaron, a three-year restoration of a 1951 Chevrolet for which Dale crafted many mechanical parts when restoration parts were unavailable. There was never a project that Dale could not complete.
He was generous with his time and his talents and will be deeply missed. Dale is survived by his family, Aaron (Erin) Petersen, Andy Moon Wilson (Jiha Moon) and Kelly (Trent) Bossley and so many friends whom he embraced in love, without judgment. Dale loved broadly and deeply and left this world a far better place. Services for Dale Petersen include visitation from 4-7 on Friday night, January 17th and his funeral at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 18th at Community United Methodist Church in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa.
