Gary Karl Mundt, 79 years old, from Castalia, passed away peacefully to his Heavenly Father on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2025 at Gunderson Palmer Hospital in West Union with many of his loving family by his side.
Gary was born on June 13, 1945 in Decorah, Iowa. He was the son of Verla Katherine Mundt. He grew up in Castalia and graduated from Postville High School on May 22,1963. Gary was drafted by the United States Army and began his military service on May 28, 1966. He was stationed in Colorado and served in Chicago during the riots of 1968. He was relieved from military duty on May 27, 1968 and returned home to Castalia. He worked several jobs until joining Camcar in Decorah, on Jan. 11, 1969. He was a faithful employee at Camcar for 38 years, rarely missing a day of work. In January 2007, Gary suffered a heart attack that changed everything. He retired from Camcar on June 15, 2007. He received many awards for his stellar attendance, quality service and ingenuity. When implemented, his ideas made the company better.
Gary enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing with his wife and family. He loved playing cards with his friends downtown and, in his early years, being part of the men’s softball league that earned him the nickname, Hammer. Gary loved helping his wife with all aspects of gardening. He enjoyed helping with canning and was the master at dicing vegetables. He was extremely proud of the abundance of tomatoes in 2014 that resulted in over 100 quarts of tomatoes.
Gary loved all sports and was always present for his kid’s events in high school. His favorite was watching football and his number one love was the Green Bay Packers! Most of his family also love the Green Bay Packers and are grateful they were able to take Gary to Lambeau Stadium recently for Shareholder’s Day. Gary served on the Castalia Town Council for several years and also as a deacon at Zion Lutheran Church. He had a very enjoyable personality and always gave people a laugh or two. He was a real jokester at heart, always ready with a comeback and was known to pull quite a few pranks. He enjoyed reading the daily newspaper. Recently, he found great excitement in following Caitlin Clark’s basketball career. Gary was a wonderful father, grandfather and great grandfather. He enjoyed showing his love to his family during every visit and never left without giving each grandchild a dollar for a treat. Gary will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him!
Gary is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Jennifer (Beisker) Mundt, his daughter, Tami Clark and husband, Mike, of Waukesha, WI and son, Todd Mundt and wife, Carmen of rural Plainfield, IA.. He has six grandchildren, Morgan, Madison, Ben and Jack Clark, Jake and Brody Mundt, and one great granddaughter, Mia Clark. Also surviving are Karen Ney, who grew up with Gary as a sister, and husband, Kenneth. He is also survived by many sister-in-laws, a brother-in-law, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Verla, his grandmother, Minnie and his aunt, Esther Schroeder. Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia where Gary was baptized and laid to rest.
A private Celebration of Life will be held at Zion Lutheran Church officiated by Pastor Daryl Schultz.
