Robert John (Bob) Halm, 89, died December 26, 2011 in his home surrounded by his loving family.
Funeral services will be Saturday December 31, 2011 at 10 a.m. at Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home and a Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, with Msgr. Kevin McCoy officiating. Burial will follow at Corpus Christi Cemetery, with Military Rites presented by the VFW Post 1856. A visitation will be Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home, with a Vigil at 7 p.m.
Survivors include his children: Dave (Denise) of Haverhill, Iowa, Dan (Susan) of Yellow Springs, Ohio, Marsha (Greg) of St. Paul, Minnesota, Margo (Rich) of Salem, Oregon; grandchildren: Matthew of Pullman, WA, Travis of Ames, Iowa; and his brother, Donald of Okemos, Michigan. Bob is preceded in death by his parents: George and Amalia; wife, Eloise; brothers: William and Jack.
Bob was born June 9, 1922 in Thomas Township, Saginaw County, Michigan. In 1940 he graduated from Saints' Peter and Paul High School in Saginaw. Bob entered the United States Army in 1942 and served in the Theatre Service Forces, European Theater of the US Army Corps based in Cheltenham, England during WWII. Following his honorable discharge; he continued his education, graduating from Michigan State University (BA) in 1948 and the University of Iowa (MFA) in 1950. Bob served as an art educator at Fort Dodge Senior High School from 1950-1966, and Fort Dodge/Iowa Central Community College from 1950 until his retirement in 1989.
Bob served as the Director of the Blanden Art Gallery in Fort Dodge (1954-1966), was a member of the Executive Board of the Fort Dodge Federation of Arts (1951 to 1975), and the Board of Trustees of the Blanden Memorial Art Museum (1968 to 1986) where he also served as a docent. He was a member of the Golden Kiwanis League of Fort Dodge and a volunteer at the Webster County Historical Society. Bob's artwork, which embodies the Iowa and Great Lakes region, has been shown since 1950 in private and public exhibitions across the country but most notably Iowa. In his free time, Bob was an avid voracious reader, he enjoyed gardening, nature, and traveling.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Bob's memory may be sent to the Blanden Art Museum or the University of Iowa School of Art and Art History.
