Esther Vegors, 97, Orlando, Fla., died Sunday, May 21, 2000 at Westminster Towers in Orlando. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Foster Funeral home with Cindi O'Brien, ministry assistant, officiating. Burial will be in the Vegors Cemetery, south of Homer. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 5-9 p.m. Wednesday and prior to the service on Thursday.
Esther Eloise Sharpe, daughter of James and Anna Ehret Sharpe, was born July 17, 1902 at Oxford, Iowa. She attended school in Hampton and received her B.S. and Masters in Education from the University of Iowa. On Sept. 3, 1925, she married Stanley Henry Vegors at Hampton. She taught school in Iowa City for two years. Following her husband's graduation from medical school in 1927, the couple resided in Detroit, Mich., where he served his residency. They moved to Sault Saint Marie, Mich. For two years, she served as the director of the YMCA in Bloomington, Ill. In 1957, they moved to Mason City. Dr. Vegors died Sept. 15, 1966. She moved to the Scottish Rite Park in Des Moines and to Florida in 1994.
Survivors are a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Stanley and Ann Vegors of Pocatello, Idaho; daughters and son-in-law, Sally and Pat Janis of Leesburg, Fla., Mary and Howard Swiger of Wildwood, Fla., 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son in infancy, her parents, a grandson, brothers Wilbur and Lawrence Sharpe.
She was a member of the Congregational Church in Des Moines, Phi Beta Kappa, Pi Lambda Theta, a member of the DAR and a member of PEO.
