James Morris MUMFORD and wife Martha Ellen FOOKS of Worcester Co., MD, left there in 1851, and came to Liberty Township, Lucas Co., IA about 1854/5 after a stop in Franklin Co., OH near Columbus. They left OH in 1853, and reached Woodford Co., IL the same year. It is unknown if they remained very long in IL. MUMFORD siblings in the journey to Iowa include the eldest: sister Letitia MUMFORD (wife of Peter Campbell DAVIS). Brothers were Jesse E. MUMFORD with wife Charlotte Ann CROPPER; and brother Joseph (or Joe) MUMFORD (also appears in later records as Josiah and/or Josiah Showell MUMFORD. His wife was Ann MURRAY, d/o Severn MURRAY, of Worcester Co., MD. She died on the wagon trip west in an unknown place. The three motherless children, Rufus James, Sarah Ann,(Mrs. Thomas W. HOLLOWAY), and John Lemual grew to maturity in Lucas Co. These MUMFORD and related families purchased public land in 1856 through the Chariton Land Office in the vicinity of White Breast Creek near the Warren Co./Lucas Co., boundary near the site of Oakely, and near present day Lacona, Warren Co. and Newbern, Marion Co. A school site in the area appears as MUMFORD school on area maps.
