Myrtle M. Hawbaker

Myrtle Marie Hawbaker, daughter of John W. and Frances E. Guthrie Watson, was born January 14, 1906 in Van Buren County near Hillsboro, and died Saturday, August 11, 1990 at Van Buren County Memorial Hospital, Keosauqua, at the age of 84.

She married Ray F. Hawbaker November 23, 1824 near Hillsboro. He preceded her in death January 26, 1954.

To this union was born one son, John Russell.

She was a member of the Methodist Church of Hillsboro until it disbanded.

On August 3, 1952 she and Ray were baptized and became members of the Hillsboro Church.

Beside her husband she was preceded in death by her mother, father, granddaughter, Connie Sue Hawbaker, and brothers, Deane and Wayne "Bill" Watson.

She was a clerk in the Hillsboro Post Office from 1943 until 1962 when she was appointed postmaster. She served in that capacity until retiring in 1971. Surviving are her son, John and daughter-in-law, Trevea, Renville, Minn., granddaughters, Marlene Rae Hawbaker, Renville and Jane Marie Hernandez, Mercedes, Texas and a great grandson, Michael Hernandez. Also surviving two sisters, Mrs. Harold (Lois) Whittington, Dallas, Tex. and Mrs. Francis (Betty) Simpkins, Melbourne, Arkansas, a brother, Warren Watson, Renville, MN, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 14, 1990 at 10:30 a.m. in First Baptist Church, Hillsboro, with Rev. Hugh Alley and Rev. Ed Newman officiating. Interment was in Hillsboro Cemetery. Memorials were established for her church and the Hillsboro Cemetery. Arrangements were in charge of Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua.
