Edith Meek Baker

Edith Meek Baker, 98, of 3140 Plank Road, died at 7 p.m. Monday, May 29, in River Hills Nursing Home.

She was born Jan. 7, 1891, in Bonaparte, Iowa, the daughter of Kirk and Agnes Marshall Meek. She married E. Ross Baker on March 29, 1913, in Keokuk. He preceded her in death on March 18, 1925. She had resided in Keokuk since 1912 and was very active in Keokuk social life.

She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, PEO, Keokuk Country Club, DAR, Baby Welfare League, Grace Goddard Circle and Keokuk Area Hospital Auxiliary.

She was on the board of the Visiting Nurses Association for many years. She was secretary of the Lee County Board of Social Welfare for 21 years. She was president of the Benevolent Union Board continuously for 42 years and was the executive secretary of the American Red Cross in Keokuk during World War II.

Survivors include her nieces Marjory Hubert and Gene DeLoach; four grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons and two stepsons.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. John's Episcopal Church with Rev. Frederick Figge officiating.

Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

Memorials may made to St. John's Episcopal Church.

DeJong's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
