Donald Ray "Jiggs" Smith, 55, of Memphis, died at 2 a.m. Monday, May 29, in Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines.
He was born July 13, 1933, in Thompson, Iowa, the son of Floyd and Maxine Kingsbury Smith. He married Mary Lucille Lucas on Sept. 7, 1957, in Kirksville. He served four years as a paratrooper and was employed for 33 years by the Northeast Missouri Telephone Company in Green City, Mo., serving the Memphis area.
He was a member of the IBEW Local Union 814 and the Moose Lodge in Kirksville.
Survivors include his wife; step daughters Mrs. Elaine Cross of Memphis, Mrs. Sharon Humphrey of Hartford, Iowa, and Mrs. Phyllis Gaffney of Milton, Iowa; two grandsons; mother and step-father Mr. and Mrs. Mike Friesenborg of Thompson, Iowa, and five brothers.
He was preceded in death by his father, a brother and a grandson.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Memphis with Rev. Seth Worman and Rev. Larry Groom officiating.
Burial will be in the Memphis Cemetery.
Visitation will be held after 10 a.m. Wednesday at Payne-Gerth Chapel in Memphis and the family will meet with friends from 6-8 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the Boys Town in Missouri.
