Merle D. Meredith, son of Otto and Cassie Krenmeyer Meredith, was born May 2, 1915 in Van Buren County and died early Thursday morning, July 6, 1989 at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Knoxville, at the age of 74.
Merle graduated from Bonaparte High School in 1932, joined the United States Army in 1936, served through World War II, was wounded in action in Italy and had since been disabled.
He had farmed near Bonaparte and moved to Troy community in 1972. He was a life member and past commander of Sargeant-Osweiler Post No. 563, American Legion, Bonaparte; a member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 1, Ottumwa; the National Rifle Association and the National Trappers Association.
He married Edith Huff October 7, 1951 in Kahoka, Missouri.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 10, 1989 at 1 p.m. at Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua with Reverend Ken Ferguson officiating. Interment, with military honors by Sargeant-Osweiler Post and the Keokuk American Legion-Veterans of Foreign Wars Honors Team was in Keokuk National Cemetery, Keokuk.
A memorial was established.
