Seeking Petree/Petrie Family data from mid-1800s forward.

PETREE PRIOR TO 1895 | PETRIE AFTER 1880

Am attempting to locate any information pertaining to my great-great grandfather, William Petree/Petrie. Born in Grainger Country, TN on 03 DEC 1830, William married Nancy Elizabeth -- nee Smith -- Petree (1846-1943) in 1866 and they spent the remainder of their lives farming in Union County. Sometime between the 1880 US Census and the 1895 Iowa Census, the spelling of the family name was changed to Petrie, which affected all immediate relations and heirs (Q: would there be a local record of this?). William died on 07 MAR 1906 and is interred in Morgan Cemetary in Kent. Various census records suggest that his mother was from Pennsylvania and his father was either from Pennsylvania or Germany. Further details on either parent are lacking, and I'm admittedly new to this sort of research. I am descended from William's son, Charles Clyde Petrie (1976-1952), formerly of Shannon City/Platte/Arispe/Marshalltown.
