Obituary of the Late Mrs. Foote
She was Classmate in College of President Garfield
Mrs. Dorinda E. Foote, nee Mills, was born in Ashtabula County, Ohio, May 20, 1830. She married September 14, 1859 to I. M. Foote at Mentor, Ohio. She lived in Ohio until 1867 when she and her husband moved to Warren County, Iowa, thence to Creston in 1873, which has been her home ever since.
Mrs. Foote was the mother of four children, a son who died in infancy, a daughter, Clara, now Mrs. Geo. H. Bickford, a son, Arthur E., and the youngest daughter, May Rose, who died in 1920. All these children were born in Ohio except May, who was born in Warren County, this state. It is interesting to note in this connection that there is a photograph taken a few years ago of Mrs. Foote, her children, her grandchildren and a great grandson.
Mrs. Foote lived in the times when history was warm in the making, not only of the world at large but also of our country and more particularly of our church. She was a classmate in college of President Garfield. Her husband (who died in 1899) was a veteran of the Civil War. She has heard Alexander Campbell speak and indeed is one of the very few, who have survived to these times, who heard the eloquent evangelist when he summoned all who wished to hear the Gospel preached in its purity to follow him.
Mrs. Foote herself joined the Christian church when a mere girl and was a consistent and steadfast member to the last. She was one of the charter members of our church here in Creston when it was founded in 1875, and in the earlier years of the struggling Christian community she was one of its most active workers.
Not only was she active in the work as long as she was physically able, but she brought up her children to be active workers too. It will be remembered by all of us here that her daughter, May, was continuously Treasurer of the Women’s Board of Missions for over twenty years.
Just a few days ago she asked her daughter to read to her, her favorite passage in the Bible – the 14th chapter of St. John, the beloved disciple of Jesus, about the home with many mansions. And on last Thursday, March 15th, 1923, at one o’clock just as the whistles were calling the toilers of this world to work, her spirit was called by the Master to her home in the mansions above at the ripe old age of 92 years, 9 months and 25 days.
Funeral services were held at the Christian church at 10 a.m. yesterday, conducted by Rev. Jerome E. Emanuel.
