Floyd A. Spencer, 79, a retired classical scholar and a former intelligence officer in the Army and the Department of Defense, died of kidney failure Saturday at the Bay Manor Nursing Home in Annapolis.

Mr. Spencer was born in Bedford, Iowa. He graduated from the University of Colorado and earned a doctorate at the University of Chicago. He taught the Greek classics at Ohio Wesleyan, the University of Illinois, New York University, and other colleges in the 1920s and 1930s.

In World War II, he was a lieutenant colonel in the military police. Later he was a military attache in Cairo, egypt, and then an intelligence office in the Pentagon. From 1950 to 1958, he taught sociology at Queens College in Charlotte, N.C. He moved to Reisterstown, Md., in that year and remained there until 1977, when the moved to Glen Burnie.

Survivors include his wife, Paula Bayne Spencer, and a son, Philip, of the home in Glen Burnie.
