He was reared in Norway and resided in that country until he left his native land and came to America. His religious training was given him in the Lutheran faith in the land of his nativity, where he was confirmed and became a member of the Norwegian Lutheran Church when 15 years of age.

Upon his arrival in the United States he at first located at Akron, Iowa, where he made his home with a brother. Having learned the barber's trade in Norway he very naturally followed this calling after coming to this country. After serving as a barber at the several places mentioned, he then purchased a shop at Havelock, Iowa, which he operated for a period of time.

He was married to Miss Grace Jarvis of Bradgate in 1918, after which they established their home at Havelock, where they lied until coming to Story City in 1922. To them were given three sons. He was a kind husband to his companion, a loving father to his children and a good provider for his family, as well as a good workman at his trade.

He died at his home soon after the noon hour on last Tuesday, October 10, 1939, at the age of 44 years and 7 months. He is survived by his sorrowing widow; his three sons, Shirley age 19, Stanley age 18, and Jerry age 13; five brothers, of whom three live in Norway and two in Iowa, M. M. Silkebakken of Dallas Center and O. M. Silkebakken of Akron.

Funeral services were held Friday forenoon, with Rev. Bergeman officiating at the home and at the Grace church, assisted in the latter service by Rev. S. T. Nelson. Mrs. Ruth Fuller-Donhowe sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Some Time We'll Understand," accompanied at the organ by Vernon Anderson. The pallbearers were J. M. Gertsen, Herman Ahrens, Alfred Jacobson, John Hill, Irvin Jensen and John Hill.

Interment was made at the cemetery at Humboldt.
