Fred Hemness Passes On

Succumbs to Flu at Hospital in North Platte, Neb., Last Saturday Evening.

Fred Hemness, 41, son of Olaf Hemness of this place, died at the hospital in North Platte, Neb., Saturday evening following an attack of the flu and complications.

His brother Lee and sister Elsie were at his bedside when he died.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, conducted by Rev. Wiegman of Fremont, Neb., a former Lutheran pastor at North Platte. Burial was made in the North Platte cemetery, with Masonic service at the grave.

Fred was born and reared in Story City, the oldest child of Mr. and Mrs. Olaf Hemness.

He enlisted in the army in 1917, serving with the 430 Motor Supply train. After the war he became manager of Panor shoe store in Lincoln, Neb. In the spring of 1920 he joined the Penney organization, and his first assignment was in the Dalles, Ore. Here he met and married Maude Harriman. He was transferred to Lancaster, Pa., where he remained until 1926, when he went to North Platte to manage the large Penney store there.

He is survived by his wife and two children, Donna Lee, 12, and William, 16. Also by his father of Story City, brother Lee of Maquoketa, and two sisters, Mrs. Orlin Donhowe of Logansport, Ind., and Mrs. C. C. Campbell of Des Moines. His mother preceded him in death several years ago.

Hemness had entered into a varied and busy life in his city. He belonged to the Lutheran church there, and also the Rotary club, the Masons, Knights Templar, American Legion and Elks, besides being a director of the chamber of commerce and leader of the North Platte group of Penney managers of the district. In every walk of life he was highly esteemed and his death caused grief in a wide circle of relatives and friends.
