From the Sioux County Capital, September 12, 1978:
Alton Family Received Farm Award
Honoring Iowa’s family farm heritage, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Robert H. Lounsberry presented Century Farm awards to nearly 200 Iowa farm families at ceremonies held at the Iowa State Fair on Friday, August 25th. Metal farm markers were distributed by the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation to award recipients. The Agnes Miller farm of rural Alton was designated a Century Farm.
To qualify as a Century Farm the land must have been owned by the same family for at least one hundred (100) years with the present owner related to a person who owned the land 100 years ago. The farm must also be at least 40 acres. However, Lounsberry explained that “To be designated a Century Farmer is to say far more than that you have owned a certain piece of farmland for a certain period of time, rather it states that you, and the ancestors you represent, exemplify a way of life that is rich and abundant, just like the land of which you were born.”
