Ahlers, William Sr. 1861-1941 & Rose Haupert Family

This story was taken from page 58 of the St. Joseph Catholic Church Book 1886-1996. It was transcribed by Sarah Theis for the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes have been added.

William Ahlers, Sr. was born December 4, 1861 at Luxembourg, Iowa. At the age of 21 he joined his brother, Henry, in farming at LeMars for four years.

William became one of the early pioneer farmers to settle at Granville in the spring of 1887 when he moved to his father’s farm, land which he purchased two years later. He joined about seventy families in building a church and school; he helped to establish the Farmer’s Elevator; in partnership with several others, he opened the Farmer’s Lumber Co. in Granville; he served several terms on the school board and as a township trustee.

On February 5, 1889, William married Rose Haupert at St. Joseph Church in Granville. Rose was born on September 13, 1868 in Jackson County in eastern Iowa and had moved to Remsen and then to a farm southwest of Granville with her parents, brother and sister.

William and Rose became the parents of sixteen children: Henry, Anna (Mrs. John Schover), John, Joseph, Michael, William Jr., Lawerence, Adelaide (died at age one), Rose (Mrs. Ben Vortherms), Anton, Arnold, Ida (Mrs. Bill Vortherms), Raymond, Benjamin, Isabel (Mrs. Cyril Thier) and Albert. They retired from farming and moved into a home in Granville in 1924. Their Golden wedding anniversary was observed February 5, 1939. William passed away on July 28, 1941 and Rose on June 6, 1963 in Granville.

Rose Margaret Haupert born 13 September 1868 in Jackson County, Iowa died 6 June 1963 in Granville, Iowa. Her parents were Michael Haupert born 14 Aug 1838 Luxembourg died 19 July 1922 Alton, Iowa and Mary Monner born 24 July 1846 Luxembourg died 20 Jan 1919 Alton, Iowa. William and Rose were the parents of sixteen children.

Frances born 23 October 1887 in Alton, IA died 21 Feburary 1970 in Alton, IA. Their four children were listed in Henry Ahlers obituary from this website. 2. Anna Mathilda Ahlers born 16 May 1891 in Granville, IA died 4 Jan 1919 in Dell Rapids, SD. She married John Louis Schuver on 28 Jan, 1913 in Granville, IA. John was born 2 June, 1887 in France died 22 January, 1942 in Parkston, SD. Their daughters are listed as Dolorosa A and Mildred M. John remarried after Anna’s death to Mathilda Martha Hansen.

3. John Michael Ahlers born 24 June, 1892 in Granville, IA died 13 July, 1968 in Granville, IA. He married Anna Gertrude Degen on 13 February, 1915 in Granville, IA. Anna was born 25 August, 1889 in Henry County, Illinois died 24 April 1919 in Granville, IA. John and Anna had two sons, Robert and Leo William. John married Frances Marie Hodapp 11 September, 1933 in Granville, IA. Frances was born 4 December, 1907 in Granville, IA died 24 June, 1996 in Sioux City, IA. This was the second marriage for Frances. She had married Anton Joannes Ahlers on 16, June, 1928. John and Frances had 2 sons and 1 daughter. Gerald, Raphael and Carol.

4. Joseph Herman Ahlers born 3 August 1893 in Granville IA died 18 October 1978 in Dell Rapids, SD. Joesph married Pauline Mary Bricher 22 April, 1919 in Dell Rapids, SD. Pauline was born 11 September 1896 in Alton, IA died 17 March 1985 in Dell Rapids, SD. There are eight children listed on Ancestry, six boys and two girls. Sylvester, Donald, Evelyn, Jerome, Marcella, Joseph, Vincent and Arnold.
5. Michael Clem Ahlers was born 23 November, 1894 in Granville died 18 January, 1957 in Salem, SD. Michael married Mary Rose Macke 18 November, 1924 in Salem SD. Mary was born 1 April, 1900 in Salem, SD died 15 July, 1987 in Salem, SD. A census report shows they had three sons and a daughter. Marvin, Alvin, Melaine, and Robert.

6. William Peter Ahlers born 28 Febuary, 1896 in Granville, IA died 27 November, 1984 in Granville, IA. William married Mary Margareta Schwarz 16 May, 1922 in Granville, IA. Mary was born 10 January, 1900 in Granville, IA died 5 September 1988 in Granville, IA. A census report shows they had three daughters and one son. Florence, Lucille, Ruth and Emmet.

7. Lawrence Matthew Ahlers born 25 April, 1897 in Granville, IA died 7 April 1998 in Remsen, IA. Lawrence married Olivia Barbara Sudtelgte 8 February, 1927 in Remsen, IA. Olivia was born 18 August, 1897 in Remsen, IA died 15 Feburary 1996 in Remsen, IA. The following is from Lawrence’s obituary in the Remsen Bell, Thursday, April 16, 1998, page 1. Surviving are a son, Ervin of Remsen; three daughters, Mrs. Donald (Mary Ann) Garvin of Fulda, Miss., Mrs. Mike (Lorraine) Pohlen of Eden Prairie, Miss., and LaDonna Ahlers of Omaha, Nebr., 18 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Cynl (Isabelle) Their (?) of Adrian, Minn.
He was preceded in death by ten brothers, Henry, John, Joseph, Michael, William Jr., Anton, Rev. Arnold, Benjamin, Albert and Raymond; four sisters, Mrs. John (Anna) Schurver, Adelheid at the age of one, Mrs. Ben (Rose) Vortherms, and Mrs. Bill (Ida) Vortherms, one granddaughter, Mary Pohlen, and one great-grandson, Lucas.

8. Adelheid Mary Ahlers born 1 August 1898 in East Orange Township, Sioux County, IA died 6 August 1899 East Orange Township, Sioux County and is buried in Granville, IA. See her obituary on this website.

9. Rose Elizabeth Ahlers born 9 April 1900 in Granville, IA died 29 September, 1941 in Dell Rapids, SD. Rose married Bernard John Vortherms Jr. 26 April, 1921 in Granville, IA. Bernard was born 27 August, 1897 in Granville, IA died 26 January 1962 in Dell Rapids, SD. Rose and Bernard had three children, Bernard Jospeph who died as an infant, Arthur William 1937-2015 and Rose Mary E 1938-1988. All are buried in Dell Rapids, SD.

12. Ida Anna Ahlers born 1 July 1905 in Granville, IA died 18 October 1989 in Adrain, MN. Ida married William Henry Vortherms 26 May, 1924 in Granville, IA. William was born 25 May, 1900 in Granville, IA died 12 March 1963 in Adrian, MN. Ida and William had two sons, Robert and Orville.

13. Raymond Theodore Ahlers born 20 December, 1906 in Granville, IA died 4 Febuary 1996 in Granville, IA. Raymond married Rosella Elizabeth Auchstetter 6 January 1931 in Hospers, IA. Rosella born 3 May 1910 in Hospers, IA died 6 January, 1940 in Le Mars, IA. They had five children, Herald, Lenard, Dennis, Norbert and Joanne. See obituary on this website.

14. Benjamin Peter Ahlers born 13 March, 1908 in Granville, IA died 5 July, 1975 in Worthington, MN. Benjamin married Clara Thorman 14 September, 1934 in Marcus, IA. Clara born 14 September 1916, Granville, IA died 21 October 1999 in Sioux City, IA. The childrens names were found on findagrave.com and are as follows: James, Lois, Darlene, Charles, Mike, Stephen and Tom.

15. Isabelle Catherine Ahlers born 16 March, 1910 in Granville, IA died 7 August 2001 in Adrain, MN. Isabelle married Cyril A Thier on 20 January, 103 in Granville IA. Cyril born 30 March, 1904 in Wilmont, MN died 14 December 1995 in Adrian, MN. Info on their children came from bios on findagrave.com and Ancestry census reports. They had two children die in infancy. Living children are Virginia, Ileen, Richard and Leo.

16. Albert John Ahlers born 20 June 1912, Granville, IA died 20 January 1977 Dell Rapids, MN. Albert married Syra Ann Schnieders 19 February 1936 in Minnehaha County, SD. Syra born 16 February, 1913 in Remsen, IA died 25 August 1977 in Dell Rapids, MN. According to Roger’s obituary (unsourced, from findagrave.com), their children include Fern, Albert, Kenneth, Joyce, David, Earl, Roger and Francis.

Wm. Ahlers Sr. Pioneer Granville Resident Dies 
Wm. Ahlers Sr. pioneer Granville retired farmer, passed on at his home there on Monday, July 28th. Funeral services will be held this Thursday morning at nine o’clock at St. Joseph’s church.
Mr. Ahlers was 79 years old and some months. He was born at Luxemburg, Iowa, on Dec 3, 1861. As a boy of 19 he came to Le Mars when that town was still a hamlet, and for several years farmed with his brother, Henry, in that vicinity. He then bought the home farm a mile south and a mile west of Granville and soon thereafter married Rose Haupert, daughter of a neighboring family. 16 children were born to the couple of whom thirteen survive. It will be recalled that a picture of the family appeared in this paper some years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Ahlers moved to Granville 25 years ago and have since made their home there nearly 58 years residence in the community.
Mrs. Ahlers survives her husband and the surviving children, 10 sons and three daughters are: Henry and John of Granville; Joe, Dell Rapids; Mike, Salem SD; Wm. Jr. Granville; Laurence, Remsen; Rev. A. J., Otto IA; Ray, Granville; Ben, Worthington MN; Albert, Dell Rapids SD; Rose, Mr. Ben Vortherms, Dell Rapids; Ida Mrs. Wm. Vortherms, Adrian MN; Isabel, Mrs. Cyril Their, Rushmore MN. A daughter died in early childhood and another Mrs. John Schuver Anna in 1919; Tony in 1930, Mr. Ahlers is also survived by a brother Herman Ahlers and one sister Mrs. Theresa Schwarz both of Granville. All the children were home for the services, beside many other relatives and friends to do homage to the fine old pioneer.

Rites Held Here For Oldest Resident, Mrs. Wm. Ahlers Funeral services were held at St. Joseph Church Monday morning at 10:00 o'clock for Mrs. William Ahlers Sr. who passed away Thursday morning, J June 8, at 7:10, at the age of 94, due to Infirmities of her age. A solemn Requlem Mass was read by Rev. N, J. Becker, celebrant, Rev. J. J. Dalhoff, deacon, Rev Z, Relsing, subdeacon.
Rose Haupert was born Sept 13, 1868 in Jackson County, la., daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Haupert, and came with her parents to a farm between Remsen and Le Mars, later moved to a farm north of Remsen, and In 1882 came to a farm southwest of Granville. On Feb. 5, 1889, she was married to William Ahlers at St. Joseph Church, Granville, and began farming southwest of Granville where they resided until retiring and moving to town In 1924. Mr. Ahlers passed away July 28. 1941.
"Grandma Ahlers" as she was known by all, broke her hip in a fall July 28, 1958 and was in a wheel chair being bedfast only about two weeks and was always cared for by her children in her home. They were the parents of 16 children.
Surviving are seven sons, John, Bill and Ray of Granville, Lawrence of Remsen, Joe and Albert of Dell Rapids, S. D., Ben of Worthinigton, two daughters: Mrs. Ida Vortherms of Adrian, Minn., (Isabelle) Mrs. Cyril Thier, of Rushmore, Minn., numerous grandchildren, and many great grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Mary Perlot of Granville The (last surviving member of that Haupert family). Preceding her in death were her husband, four sons, Henry, Mike, Anton and Rev. Arnold Ahlers, three daughters; (Anna) Mrs. John Schuver, (Rose) Mrs. Ben Vortherms, and Adelaide, her parents, one brother, and five sisters. Rosary was recited at the Fisch Funeral Home, Remsen, Saturday evening, and at Spalding Hall, Granville, Sunday evening. Burial was in St. Joseph cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons, Odelo, Leo, Sylvester, Marvin, Irvin and Emmett Ahlers.
