Peuse, William 1833-1910 & Sara Mookhoek Family

This story was taken from pages 453-454 of the Maurice Centennial Book (1891-1991). The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Beth De Leeuw of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes were added by Wilma J. Vande Berg..

William Peuse (September 4, 1833 – September 21, 1910), and Sara Mookoek (April 17. 1838 – April 1, 1911), and their three daughters and one son, came from Holland in 1876. They first lived in Wisconsin, then came to Maurice, where they farmed one mile north, and 1¼ mile east of Maurice. They attended the First Reformed Church and their children went to country school. Nettie and Kate were school teachers, Anna took in sewing, and John was a farmer. (John’s twin brother died in infancy). Nettie married John Penhalligan and moved to Minnesota. Anna married Frank Baker and moved to South Dakota. Kate married Tip Baker and moved to Minnesota. Later William and Sara moved to the town of Maurice, and son John stayed on the farm.

John married Maggie Roelfson of Alton, in 1901. They had nine children. Six were born on the Maurice farm (Sarah, 1902; Jennie, 1904; Minnie, 1905; William, 1907; Mattie, 1909; and Evert, (1911). They then moved to Ireton where John, (1913) and Kate, (1916), were born. They then farmed at Alton, for one year and then back to Maurice, where they lived one mile north of town. Henry was born there in 1920. In 1924 they bought a farm one mile south and 2¾ miles east of Maurice. They continued to live there for many years. Most of their children married while living on that farm. (Stories of Jennie, Minnie, William, Evert, and John Jr. appear elsewhere).

Sarah married Ben Den Ouden December 27, 1935. They lived in Maurice, where Ben was the janitor of the Maurice Public School. Sarah passed away May 12, 1941. Ben later moved to Michigan, where he passed away April 11, 1958. Mother Maggie passed away August 7, 1936. Father John continued to stay on the farm with sons John and Henry, and daughters Mattie and Kate. In 1946, Father John, Mattie and Kate moved to Orange City. Henry stayed on the farm. He married Harriet Kleinhesselink August 20, 1946. They have four children. Father John Sr. passed away December 4, 1948. The Peuse farm was sold and Henry and Harriet moved to an acreage east of Orange City, in 1949. Mattie lives in Orange City, and continues to do housework for others. Katie married Alvin Van Berkum August 24, 1955. They farmed four miles north, one west, and ½ mile north of Orange City, until 1962, when they moved to Orange City.
