Schaul, Andrew 1858-1901 and Mathilda Weis Family

This family story was taken from the Alton St. Mary’s Catholic Church book of 1883-1983 page 208. The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes have been added.

Andrew Schaul was born in Luxemburg in 1858 and came to the country in 1867 with his parents who settled in Dubuque County. He married Mathilda Weis on February 8, 1888 and they resided on the Schaul farm east of Alton. (Now owned by Leo Gergen).

They had six children: Peter, Marjorie (Mrs. Tony Plathe), Clara (Sr. Marguerite.), Mary, Hilda, (Mrs. Chris Gerst). And a daughter who died in infancy. Sister Marguerite is living in the Holy Family Hall, Dubuque. The other children are deceased.

In 1875, the family moved to East Orange Township, Sioux county, and Andrew died in 1901 at the age of 44.

Mathilda married Mathias Kellen on February 9, 1904 and moved to Alton in 1909. One child was born to this union, Mrs. Maurice (Marcella) Smith, who is now deceased. Mathilda died October 2, 1942. Matt Kellen died April 6, 1935.

Anders ‘Andrew’ Schaul was born 22 Mar 1858 Oberfeulen, Canton de Diekirch, Luxembourg died 22 Oct 1901 buried St. Mary’s Alton IA. He was the son of Peter ‘Pierre’ Schaul 1819-1895 and Margerath Wagener 1824-1898. He married Katharina Mathilda Weis 6 Feb 1888 Sioux County IA.

Katherina Mathilda Weis was born 19 Sep 1869 Dubuque IA and died 2 Oct 1942 Alton IA. She was the daughter of Peter Weis 1840-1917 and Mary Meisch 1844-1929. Andrew and Mathilda had five children:

1. Peter G. Schaul born 12 Feb 1889 Alton IA died 14 Jan 1940 Los Angeles CA. See his obituary on this web page. It states he was survived by his wife, possibly Ethel, no further information found.

2. Margaret ‘Maggie’ Schaul born Mar 1893 Alton IA died 10 Jan 1921 Alton IA . She married Anton J. Plathe on 23 Nov 1915. They had a son Alvin Antony Herman Plathe 1917-1918 Margaret’s obit was carried in the Alton Democrat of Jan 29, 1921.

3. Clara K. Schaul born 7 Mar 1896 East Orange Twp, Sioux County IA died 21 Jul 1992 Dubuque, Iowa. She was Sister Mary Marguerite Schaul O. S. F.

4. Mary A. Schaul born 24 Dec 1898 Alton IA died 9 Jul 1957 Dubuque buried in Alton St. Mary’s. She had no family.

5. Hildegard Catherine Schaul born 17 Dec 1900 Alton IA died Dec 16, 1978 Orange City IA buried in Alton St. Mary’s. She married Christian Matthew Gerst 1894-1976. Five daughters, Mrs. Ronald (Shirley) Ludwig and Mrs. Edythe Seoblic, both of Alton, Mrs. John (Beverly) Johnson of Jacksonville-, N.C., Mrs. Robert (Anna Marie) Bergner of Remsen and Mrs. Robert (Janice) Cole of Manassas, Va. Her obit was in the Alton Democrat of Dec 20, 1978.

Child of Mathilda’s marriage to Mathias Kellen:
1. Marcella ‘Marcia’ Grace Kellen born 1 Aug 1907 Alton IA died 19 Sep 1972 Long Beach CA. Mrs. Smith of Long Beach CA in 1957 She married Maurice V. Smith 1906-1961. No children listed in ancestry report.

OBITUARY of Andrew Schaul
From the Alton Democrat of Oct 28, 1901
After ten months of suffering with stomach trouble Andrew Schaul died at his home six miles southeast of town Tuesday morning at the age of forty-four. He had tried various physicians and started three weeks ago to Battle Creek Sanitarium but took worse on the way and never rallied.
Deceased was born in Luxemburg Europe in 1858 and came to this country in 1867 with his parents who settled in Dubuque county. In 1875 the family moved to East Orange township this county and in 1888 deceased was married to Miss Mathilda Weis. Six children were born to them of whom five remain to mourn with their mother. Three brothers and three sisters also survive. They are Nic and J. N. of Alton, P. H. of Akron and Mesdames John Pfeffer, Mike Schroeder and Henry Goebel of Alton. Funeral services from St. Mary's church were conducted Thursday by Rev. Brune, Mr. and Mrs. Nic Schaul of LeMars were in attendance from out of town.

Pioneer at Alton, Passes. Came to Granville in Early Seventies with parents. Mrs. Mathilda Kellen long time resident of this vicinity passed on at her home in Alton Friday morning. Oct 2, following a stroke the previous Monday. She has been an invalid for the past five years.
She had reached her 73 rd year last month, having been born in Dubuque Sept. 19th 1869, the daughter of pioneer parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Weis. While a small child she accompanied her parents to Sioux County, the family settling on a farm near Granville. On Feb. 8th 1888, she was married at Alton to Andrew Schaul by the late Father Luehrsmann and they resided on the Schaul farm east of Alton now occupied by Leo Gergen. Five children were born to the union, of whom three survive, namely sister M. Marguerite (Clara) of Remson; Mary at home: Mrs. Chris Gerst of Alton. Peter and Marjorie (Mrs. Tony Plathe) preceded their mother in death. Mr. Schaul passed on in 1901.
Mrs. Schaul was married on Feb 9, 1904 to Matthias Kellen and moved to Alton. One child was born to the union, Mrs. Maurice Smith (Marcella) of Long Beach Calif. Mr. Kellen passed on April 1935 and since his death Mrs. Kellen has had the devoted companionship of her daughter Mary.
Also surviving are five sisters of Mrs. Kellen, namely Mrs. Phil Muehl and Mrs. Matt Reith of Granville; Mrs. Ben Gergen of Mason City; Mrs. Oscar Kuhl of Wilmont; Mrs. John Kuhl of Yankton SD.
Mrs. Kellen was a member of the Rosary society, a good Christian and devoted wife and mother and a kind neighbor. Solemn requiem high mass was held Monday morning at St. Mary’s Church with the very Rev. J. A. Neppel as celebrant; Rev. Rudolph Henrich of Red Wing Minn as deacon; Rev. Leo A. Klein as sub deacon.
Mrs. Smith arrived here from Long Beach on last Wednesday accompanied by Grace Wagner of the same city. Others present from out of town included Mr. and Mrs. Ben Kuhl and Bernard, Mrs. Oscar Kuhl, of Wilmont MN; Mr. and Mrs. Dom. Kellen, Mrs. Dorn and son of Adrian, MN; Mrs. Anna Bunkers of Dell Rapids; Mrs. Peter Wagner of Sturgis SD; Mrs. Tom Medley of Minneapolis; Mrs. J. H. Buchholz and Jules, Miss Ethel Anglin of Carroll; Jos. Henrich of Madison MN, Mrs. Ben Berg and children of Mason City; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Polzia; Mrs. and Ms. Ralph Roberts of Reading MN; Mrs. N. C. Nemmers and Edith of Bird Island MN; Msg M. A. Schemel; Mr. and Mrs. Will Kellen of Remsen; Miss Florence Kellen of LeMars; Mr. and Mrs. Phil Muehl and Earl; Mrs. Math Reith, Mrs. and Mrs. A. P Meuhl of Granville; Mr. and Mrs. A. P. Meuhl of Marcus; besides many other from neighboring towns who came to pay tribute to this pioneer mother.
