Nick Scheckel, a resident of Alton since 1882, died at his home here early Saturday morning. Eighty-three years of age, he had been confined to his home for over three years since he fell and fractured his hip on July 4, 1932.He was born at Ernster, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg on November 6, 1852, and when a youth of fifteen came to the United States, locating at Springbrook, Iowa. He was married in 1878 to Miss Katherine Forrette. Five children were born to this union, John Scheckel of Van Nuys, California; Claude Scheckel of Detroit, Michigan; Mrs. Lowell Burrill of Akron; and two sons, Ben and Leo, who died in early childhood during an epidemic.
In 1882 Mr. and Mrs. Scheckel and their first born son came to Alton, where Mr. Scheckel built the old Dubuque House. He sold this place to J. D. Schmidt later and built on the corner now occupied by the Alton Studio. Confident of the future of the little community, when the need for a newspaper became apparent, he erected a building to house the first newspaper plant. Later he built on Main Street and erected the substantial house which the family occupied for many years.
Mrs. Scheckel died on September 7, 1933. Called home by his mother’s illness, John Scheckel remained to care for his father in his long protracted illness. Both the son and the daughter, Mrs. Lowell Burrill, have given every loving attention possible to lighten the hours for the invalid father, who for a number of years was almost totally blind, though the best medical attention was sought for him.
He closed his years as one of the pioneer builders of the town, a law abiding citizen and friend of all, for he was kind and generous in disposition.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday morning at St. Mary’s Church, the Rev. M. A. Schemel officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Claude Scheckel arrived Sunday night by car from Detroit. He is survived by three children; Mrs. Lowell Burrill of Akron; John of Van Nuys, California, and Claude of Detroit, Michigan.
