This family story was taken from the Alton St. Mary’s Catholic Church Book of 1883-1983 page 163. The story was transcribed for this BIOS by Wilma J. Vande Berg of the Greater Sioux County Genealogical Society. Some research notes have been added.
John Homan was known as John Homan Sr., due to the fact that there were two other John Homans in Alton at that time. He was born in 1853 and his wife, Louisa Hoffman, was born in 1857. He died in 1928 and she died in 1947.
John and his brother Frank, came to this area from eastern Iowa. John and Louisa had eight children. Rose died in infancy and Joe was the oldest of seven living children. Celeste married Joe Mousel, Frank married Sophia Schroeder, Ben, Charles married Pauline Mousel, Hilda and Sylvia.
The family home in Alton was located at 2nd Ave and 9th St. It was occupied by Hilda and Sylvia until their deaths.

John Peter Homan born 19 Oct 1853 St. Donatus Jackson Iowa and died 4 Aug 1928 Alton Sioux Iowa. His parents were John Homan 1808-1886 and Magdalena ‘Lena’ Catharine Streff 1820-1887. He married Louisa Hoffmann in 1881.
Louisa Hoffmann was born 8 Sep 1857 Springbrook Jackson Iowa died 10 Nov 1947 Alton Iowa. She was the daughter of Charles Dominic Hoffmann 1827-1911 and Elisabetha Dondelinger 1834-1905. John Homan and Louisa had eight children.

3 Frank Peter Homan born 26 May 1887 Alton IA died 10 Jun 1962 Shorewood Milwaukee Wisconsin. He married 31 Jan 1911 to Sophia Schroeder. Three children were born to them- Vernon and Helen of Milwaukee and Lt. Ray Homan who was killed in action in World War II. Frank had a drug store in Mandan ND. See his obit on this web page.

JOHN HOMAN SR. CAME TO THE ALTON VICINITY IN 1881--WAS A RESPECTED CITIZEN
John Homan, Sr. pioneer resident of Alton, passed away at his home Saturday afternoon at one o’clock. Heart trouble was the immediate cause of his death, though he had been confined to his home with diabetes for about two years. He was nearly 75 years of age.
Mr. Homan was born at St. Donatus, Iowa to Mr. John and Magdalena (Streff) Homan on October 19, 1853. In the late ‘70s he came to Sioux County, buying a farm five miles south of Alton. He was married February 22nd, 1881 at Le Mars to Miss Louisa Hoffman. Eight children were born to the union, the first child having died in infancy. He is survived by Mrs. Homan and seven children, namely, Joe H. of Alton; Frank P. of Mandan, North Dakota; Mrs. Joe Mousel of Alton; Ben of Bismark, North Dakota; Charles A. of Remsen; Hildegard and Sylvia at home. Mr. Homan was the last surviving member of a family of thirteen children. The late Mrs. J.P. Portz of St. Cloud, Minnesota, who passed away a few years ago, was his last surviving sister. The family lived on the farm south of town for twelve years, but moved to town 35 years ago. Even at that time Mr. Homan’s health was not good, his condition having been partly the result of an accident when a young man.
Mr. Homan was a member of St. Joseph’s society and was a member of St. Mary’s Choir for 29 years. He was a kindly man, patient under a heavy burden of physical suffering which he endured without complaint for many years, and devoted to his family and friends, a very large number of whom were present at the funeral services Tuesday, many coming long distances to honor his memory.
Solemn Requiem Mass was held at St. Mary’s Church Tuesday morning, Reverend Father Housmann was assisted in the services by Reverend Oken of Granville, Reverend Pick of Templeton and Reverend Homan of Hazelton, who was master of ceremonies. Very Reverend Brune and Father Homan completed the services at the St. Mary’s Cemetery. Old time friends were pallbearers namely Matt Herrig, Fred Mousel, Nick Croat, Jacob Klein, B. LIVED 67 YEARS IN ALTON VICINITY, RITES TODAY Mrs. Louisa (John) Homan, pioneer resident here, died at her home Monday afternoon at 12:15. She has been in failing health since early in September but on September 8th enjoyed a family dinner on the event of her 90th birthday. Sunday evening her condition became suddenly worse and members of the family were notified.
Louisa Hoffman was born September 8, 1857 at Springbrook, Iowa. At the age of 11 she came with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles D. Hoffman, sisters and brothers to Le Mars. She was married February 22, 1881 to John Homan of St. Donatus, Iowa, and the couple settled on a farm south of Alton where they lived twelve years, then moved to Alton, where Mrs. Homan has resided for 54 years. Mr. Homan died August 4, 1928.
Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Homan, one child named Rose having died in infancy. The surviving children are Joe H. Homan of Alton; Frank Homan of Milwaukee; Mrs. Joe Mousel, Le Mars; Ben D. Homan, Grand Forks, North Dakota; Charles Homan of Slayton, Minnesota; Hilda and Sylvia at home.
Also surviving are four brothers, Dennis and John Hoffman of Le Mars; Charles J. Hoffman of Dubuque and Arthur Hoffman, living in California.
Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 9:30 in St. Mary’s Church, Very Reverend J.M. Neppel officiating. All the children and their families, besides many other relatives and friends are expected for the services.
Mrs. Homan was a member of the Rosary Society of St. Mary’s Church. She was a devoted mother and kind neighbor and loved by all who knew her.
