Beggs, Mary Joan Siverly -
Mary Joan Siverly Beggs was born April 2, 1918 and passed away March 24, 2009 at
Clearview Home in Clearfield, IA at the age of 90. Joan was the fourth child born to
Fred & Dorothy Brandt Siverly of Clearfield. She was united in marriage to James
Arlo Beggs on August 11, 1940. To this union three children were born, Gary Lee,
Paula Kathleen & Dorothy Jean.
Joan attended and graduated from Clearfield High School in 1935 and attended
college in Creston to obtain her teaching degree. She taught country school near
Lenox IA and substituted at Clearfield for many years.
Joan and Arlo farmed north of Clearfield for many years before retiring and
moving to their new home in Clearfield that was built by Joan's brother Fred
Siverly & Arlo's cousin LeRoy Beggs. Joan was a member of the Clearfield United
Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Eastern Star, Clearfield Library
Board, Taylor County Museum Board and several card clubs. Her passion was making
quilts, sewing for her children & grandchildren and making comforters for just
about anyone who asked. The Siverly family gatherings and in recent years the
Siverly annual camping weekend, which included lots of reminiscing, were highlights
for Joan. She spent many years doing the Siverly genealogy, including a Siverly
genealogy quilt, and seemed to know almost everyone in all of the older pictures.
Arlo & Joan wintered many years in Alamo, Texas and enjoyed time spent at Estes
Park, CO during the summer months. They also camped many years at the IA State
Fair, helping the Clearfield Lion's with the shuttle busses.
Preceding her in death were her parents Fred & Dorothy Siverly, husband Arlo,
sisters, Martha Belle Bennett, Winnifred Frus and Ethel Graham, sister-in-law
Alice Siverly and brothers-in-law Paul Graham & Orville Frus.
Joan is survived by her son Gary (wife Pat) of Clarinda, IA, daughter Kathy Flam
(Richard Siddens) of Afton, IA, daughter Jeani Swartwood (husband Bob) of
Clearfield, IA, grandson Jeff Flam (Cindy) of Houghton, MI, granddaughter Shelly
(Randy) Bryan of Ames, IA, grandson Brett (Cynthia) Swartwood of San Antonio,
TX, grandson Brian (Tammra) Swartwood of Waukee, IA, Kim St. Pierre of Minburn,
IA, Kirk Siddens of Salt Lake City, UT, great grandchildren Josh, Kayla & Rachel
Bryan, Danielle, Lila & Samantha Drake-Flam, Erin St. Pierre, Kaysha, Caiden &
Taylor Swartwood, brothers Fred Siverly (Virginia) of Clearfield, IA and L.L. Siverly
of Lenox, IA, Godchild Dr. Jan Shimoda of Flint, MI, special friend Mary
Hoffman of Lenox, IA and many nieces, nephews & friends.
