Word has been received in the Lenox area about the death of a former teacher. Jean Harvey. The following is
information forwarded by her sister, Thelma.
Dorothy Jean Harvey was born on a farm near Blockton, IA on November 26, 1917 to Robert and Vera (Rush)
Harvey. She passed away at Hemando Pasco Hospice House, August 20, 2004, Spring Hill, Florida.
Jean received her early education in the rural schools of Taylor County. She graduated with honors from the Lenox
Community School. She received her Bachelor of Education Degree from Northwestern Missouri University, Maryville,
MO. She did graduate work at Drake University and Cervantes College, Guadlajara, Mexico.
She started her teaching career in Prescott, where she taught for two years. She taught one year in Conway before
coming to the Lenox Schools where she taught third grade for thirty-two years.
After retiring in 1980 she moved to Florida where she did volunteer teaching for a year.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Irma Helm, a niece and three nephews.
She is survived by two sisters, Thelma Harvey and Alice (Harvey) Barber, both of Spring Hill. FL.
Memorial Services were held. Wednesday. August 25, 2004 at the United Methodist Church, Spring Hill where she
was a faithful member. The service was conducted by Reverend William S. McLoud.
At her request her remains were cremated and the inurnment will be September 10, 2004 at 11:30 a.m. in the
Clearfield Cemetery. Clearfield. IA.
Jean was immensely proud of the many achievements of her former students and she still corresponded with
several of them.
She was especially fond of children and her young nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews and the many
good times they shared.
Jean was a nature lover, which is reflected in the poetry she wrote, mostly for her own enjoyment, however
some were published in Lyrical Iowa. The following is one of her writings:
Death is only an old gate
Hung in a garden wall
on quiet hinges it swings at eve
When the thrushes call.
