Knapp, Verle Frances McMahill -
Funeral services for Verle Knapp, age 84, of Sharpsburg, who died Wednesday, March 17, 2004 were held Monday,
March 22, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. at the Sharpsburg Presbyterian Church. Private family interment will held in the
Clearfield Cemetery at a later date. Memorials can be given in Verle's name .
Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Lenox.
Verle Frances was born in Ottis, Colorado on January 19, 1920, to Nella and Earl McMahill. Eight years earlier the
person who was to be her husband was born just 15 miles away in Vona, Colorado.
Her family moved to Taylor County in 1925. She attended the Bedford Schools then graduated from
Sharpsburg High School in 1938.
Verle and Coral S. Knapp were united in marriage on December 4, 1938 and their daughter, Karole Jeanne, was
born on April 28, 1944. People told Karole Jeanne how proud they were of her mother for keeping a home for her
in Sharpsburg while her father was serving in Europe during World War II. For many years, Verle attended and
supported the Presbyterian Church in Sharpsburg before becoming a member.
Many people will remember being cream and egg customers of Knapp's Produce which Verle and Coral
operated in the 1950's and early 1960's.
In Verle's middle years, she loved visiting family and friends and was delighted when they came and stayed with her.
Verle would take extended trips to Dundy County Nebraska to enjoy places and people her husband knew. She
and her current pet were always welcome in the home of her niece and nephew Ron and Pat DeWester. The urn in which
Verle's ashes will be placed was made by their son Dick. When she visited her sister, Earlus in Utah, she was
welcomed into the home of her niece and nephew Doreen and Thayne Smith.
Many loving, fun hours were spent with Jennifer and Jill Nimmo, her grandchildren by mutual choice and love.
When it came time for her to leave Sharpsburg, she felt so fortunate to have her home purchased by young people
who would continue to use it as a home and a place where people still go to have fun!
Those who are left to treasure and celebrate her life are those Who called her: Sister, Aunt, Grammy, Mom and
Friend. They will remember: The Easter egg hunts, fried chicken, fudge, strawberry shortcake, parties for young
people, passing President Ford's motorcade, "Star of the East," frogs in bird cages, embroidery, smocking, crocheted
doilies, love of reading, jigsaw puzzles, music, welcoming weekend and summer visitors, card marathons, pets, wit,
trust, and laughter.
